ROME (ITALPRESS) – “The center-right representing the change this area needs. Five years ago we began to write a different history for Umbria, and the results of our work are there for all to see. The choices and policies carried out by Donatella Tesei, Fratelli d’Italia and the entire center-right have helped boost the economy, the productive fabric and employment in this region.” Thus Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, interviewed by the “Corriere dell’Umbria” regarding the upcoming Umbrian regional elections where the center-right supports Donatella Tesei’s re-election bid. “The employment rate has reached 66.5 percent, five points higher than the national average, and this is a figure that makes us particularly proud,” she continued. “We have helped families with a package of measures worth more than 30 million euros, starting with the 500-euro contribution for new babies and the 1,200 euros for the first year of life. And then the health chapter. While the left goes around tearing up our programs and telling lies, the truth is stronger than any propaganda. In recent years, waiting lists have been cut in half, Umbria is now among the most virtuous regions in terms of health care efficiency, and work has begun on upgrading hospitals in Perugia and Terni. And I am not forgetting, of course, all the work that has been done on infrastructure and to boost tourism and enhance the extraordinary heritage of this territory.
In short, a 360-degree strategy, in full harmony with the work we are carrying out at the national level.”
Can the Umbrian result affect national political arrangements?
“I’m always reluctant to answer this kind of question,” he observes, “The left does it much better than I do, obviously depending on what suits them best. If it wins in a region, then it is a national test. If it loses, we’re looking at local issues and defeat doesn’t matter. Here, I prefer to defer to the will of the people, which is the only thing that matters in a democracy. What I can tell you is that the center-right enjoys an excellent state of health, confirmed by the success we have had since we have been in government in ten out of eleven regional elections and in the European elections, where all the majority forces have grown and strengthened. I do not like to make predictions and I always take polls with a grain of salt, but we are confident and we hope that on Sunday 17 and Monday 18 the people of Umbria will want to confirm their trust in us.” Politics and campaigning aside, how important is a region like Umbria in the government’s plans and programs? “Each territory is at the center of the government’s attention, because it is part of an overall vision that aims at a development of our entire nation. Umbria has unique characteristics: it is one of Italy’s green lungs and holds an extraordinary cultural, identity, historical and agri-food heritage. We promised that we would work to bring Umbria out of its infrastructural isolation and put this territory in a position to fully express its productive, entrepreneurial, economic and tourism potential. And that is what the government is doing, because uniting Italy means not only reducing the gaps between North and South but also connecting the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic coasts, giving the central Apennines the infrastructure they lack,” he concludes.
