Autonomy, Calderoli “We will take into account the Consulta but law goes ahead”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “There is no point in talking about winners or losers. The Consulta has sanctioned that Autonomy is constitutional, this is a Copernican revolution for the Italian system.” Thus Minister for Regional Affairs and Autonomies, Roberto Calderoli interviewed by “Il Corriere della Sera.” “We have heard for months that our law trampled on the Charter and amenities like that,” continued Calderoli the ‘godfather’ of the reform. “This was not the case. What we know is a press release and not the ruling, which I am waiting to read well and in detail. But there are no doubts about the judges’ pronouncement.” While on the remarks made by the Consultation, which on several aspects spoke of “illegitimacy,” he observes, “Look, I sincerely thank the judges for giving me all the indications that I am going to read in the judgment. In all the implementation parts I will take them into account.” “Most of the points made can be easily overcome in the implementation of the law, even with the involvement of Parliament, as the Court requested.”
Criticisms were also made about the essential levels of benefits: “The guiding principles are already contained in the Budget Law of 2023, which no one has ever challenged. If no objections arose there, explain why they have to be now? We take the Court’s solicitation for Parliament to help define the LEPs as soon as possible so as to implement the Constitution.”
Is Parliament obligated to comply with the Court’s ruling? “In principle, yes, but do you know the rulings on assisted reproduction or end-of-life? Until action is taken, we proceed with existing legislation. I remind you: the law establishing Autonomy came into force and the Court considered it constitutional.” And on the timing of the legislative process, “nothing changes. We are dealing with some regions on non-Lep matters. When we arrive at understandings you will see that they will contain the Court’s prescriptions. Otherwise we will go ahead with current legislation.” “In Bergamasque we say: l’รจ ‘ndacia (it’s gone, ed.). Yes, there would be the referendum, which for me is not even admissible. But the real stumbling block will be the quorum because Italians don’t even vote for regions and municipalities anymore. The left resign themselves, the battle is lost,” he concludes.
