Bosch launches “Road Hazard Service” that warns of hazardous conditions

STOCKHOLD (GERMANY) (ITALPRESS) – Dense fog, heavy rain, a stalled vehicle around the bend: in road traffic, these sudden events can have serious consequences. With Road Hazard Service, Bosch provides drivers with real-time information about potential hazards along the way, thereby greatly reducing the risk of accidents. As of June 2024, Bosch Road Hazard Service has been used millions of times in Europe in the car fleet of a major German automaker. Now Bosch is bringing the service to the commercial vehicle segment: from December 2024, it will also be available in Mercedes-Benz Trucks vehicles. The goal is to extend the service to cars and trucks worldwide, thereby increasing road safety for as many people as possible.Critical road conditions can be accurately predicted on the basis of anonymized data from a global customer base of several million vehicles, as well as information from third-party providers such as weather services or road operators. Fleet vehicles equipped with the Bosch service provide various types of information, including local outside temperature and activation of windshield wipers or fog lights, as well as accident reports or ESP system interventions. For example, if some vehicles in the fleet have their windshield wipers set to full speed, the service compares the information with selected weather services such as whether it is raining or how many millimeters of water have been recorded on the road. A fusion algorithm determines if there is a risk of aquaplaning and the service alerts the driver so that he or she can reduce speed if necessary. Or, if visibility for the driver is at risk of falling below a critical level, the service compares this to the fog light activity of vehicles in the affected location and uses an algorithm to figure out if a warning needs to be issued. A reference fleet consistently ensures a high level of service quality. Bosch’s wrong-way driver warning complements the service. If there is a motorist in the vicinity who is driving the wrong way or if the motorist himself is driving in the wrong lane direction, the service sends a warning directly to the navigation display.
