Italy’s Stance on Peace Talks as Leaders Meet in Paris

Today in Paris, representatives from ‘willing’ nations will meet to discuss a long-awaited ceasefire in Ukraine, focusing on immediate and long-term aid, and the establishment of a ‘reassurance force’ that French President Macron aims to create with support from the UK and European partners. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is attending the summit, alongside key government officials. In a preparatory meeting at Palazzo Chigi, Italy reaffirmed its commitment to creating robust security guarantees for Ukraine, based on the Euro-Atlantic framework and potentially mirroring NATO’s Article 5. The discussion also emphasized Italy’s stance against deploying national troops to any military force on the ground, supporting the possibility of a UN-led mission for ceasefire monitoring. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reiterated Italy’s position, stressing that Italy would only consider sending troops as part of a UN mission and highlighted the option of a NATO-style ‘Article 5-bis’ for Ukraine’s protection.

European Commissioner’s ‘Survival Kit’ Video Sparks Controversy

Hadja Lahbib, the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid, and Crisis Response, shared a playful yet controversial video with her followers, presenting a ‘survival kit’ for a 72-hour crisis. In a light-hearted tone, Lahbib showcased essential items like glasses, cash, a Swiss army knife, medicines, food supplies, and even a power bank to survive major emergencies such as wars, environmental disasters, cyberattacks, and pandemics. While the video aimed to introduce the European Union’s ‘Eu Preparedness Union Strategy’ with a fun twist, the use of humor in such a serious context sparked backlash online. Many found the tone unsettling, with some likening it to a dystopian film, criticizing the attempt to downplay the urgency of the EU’s emergency preparedness.

Italian Health Minister Pressures Regions Over Healthcare Waiting Lists

Italy’s Health Minister, Orazio Schillaci, has sent a new letter to the Conference of Regions, addressing the ongoing issue of long waiting times for medical exams and visits. Schillaci highlighted serious irregularities found in 27% of healthcare facilities following recent inspections by the Carabinieri NAS. The issue of waiting lists, worsened by the pandemic, stems from a significant imbalance between the high demand for appointments and limited availability. Although some hospitals comply with legal timeframes, many patients face months-long waits or turn to private institutions for faster service. Schillaci criticized the regions for opaque practices that hinder access to care, including the illegal closure of appointment books, and emphasized the need for structural changes to improve the system. The government’s efforts to reduce waiting lists, including the introduction of a national platform to track appointments, have yet to yield significant results.

Fires Destroy Five Beach Resorts in Ostia Following Controversial Legal Ruling

On Wednesday night, five beach resorts in Ostia, Rome, were set on fire just hours after the Council of State upheld the legitimacy of the city’s decision to auction 31 beach concessions. The affected establishments—Salus, Arcobaleno, Capanno, Vittoria, and Plinius—suffered significant damage, including to pedal boats, umbrellas, and cabins. The fires are considered arson, and while the motive remains unclear, their timing, following a ruling on a highly debated issue and involving five of the seven targeted resorts, suggests a possible link. Investigations are ongoing, and a 24-year-old man confessed to setting the fires after being apprehended with a woman at one of the resorts. The fires coincide with ongoing legal battles regarding the concession process, with beach operators contesting the legality of public tenders and citing delays in the system. The European Union’s competition rules mandate the competitive bidding of these state-owned beachfronts, but Italy has long extended concessions without proper procedures.

Yesterday evening, Carabinieri from the operational unit and PMZ of Naples Stella responded to an incident at a football school on Strada Comunale Selva Cafaro, where a 14-year-old boy collapsed before the start of training and tragically passed away. The minor’s body is now under the jurisdiction of the authorities for an autopsy.

Justice Minister Nordio Responds to Vote of No Confidence Amidst Prison Suicide Crisis

In a recent debate in the Chamber of Deputies, Justice Minister Carlo Nordio responded to the opposition’s no-confidence motion, particularly in relation to the issue of suicides in Italian prisons. He was accused of responsibility for prison overcrowding, the state of healthcare in prisons, and other allegations, comparing the situation to past inquisitions. While acknowledging the high number of suicides this year, he argued that previous years also saw significant numbers and emphasized the difficulty in determining ministerial responsibility. Nordio criticized the exaggerated tone of political discourse, pointing out offensive accusations, including claims of government favoritism toward the mafia. He insisted that despite such attacks, the government would remain steadfast in pursuing judicial career separation reforms, calling it the “mother of all reforms.” In response, opposition leader Elly Schlein of the PD questioned why the minister hadn’t acted sooner to address the issue of detainee Almasri’s transfer to Libya, demanding clarity and the truth from the government.

Romano Prodi Faces Backlash Over Controversial Incident with Journalist

Romano Prodi, former Italian Prime Minister, sparked controversy after a video emerged showing him grabbing the hair of journalist Lavinia Orefici during an interview on the ‘Di martedì’ show. The incident occurred following a question Orefici posed about the Ventotene Manifesto, which visibly irritated Prodi. In response, he criticized the question harshly, gesturing aggressively before grabbing a strand of her hair, moving it up and down. While the gesture was not overtly violent, it was widely perceived as inappropriate and invasive. Orefici later described the incident as shocking, stating that she felt both personally and professionally offended. The video quickly went viral, sparking debates and criticism, including from media figures such as Nicola Porro, who condemned Prodi’s actions. Fratelli d’Italia also voiced their disapproval, accusing Prodi of lying about the incident.

Director of Agrigento 2025 Cultural Foundation Resigns Amid Challenges

Roberto Albergoni, the general director of the foundation overseeing Agrigento’s year as the Italian Capital of Culture 2025, has resigned. While his resignation was planned at the end of 2024, it was delayed and is not linked to the issues that marked the early events of the year. The resignation followed the approval of the foundation’s budget, which should help move future events forward after some initial disruptions due to funding problems. Albergoni’s departure also coincides with the appointment of an external legal consultant by the new president of the foundation, Maria Teresa Cucinotta, which may have limited Albergoni’s authority. Controversy had surrounded Agrigento’s role as cultural capital, with issues such as leaking roofs in theaters, street signs with grammatical errors, and poorly maintained roads being hastily fixed before an official visit by President Sergio Mattarella.

Spanish Tourist Dies After Falling at Rome’s Spanish Steps

A 55-year-old Spanish tourist tragically died after falling over the railing along the Spanish Steps in Rome. The incident, reported by Repubblica, was alerted by a passerby. Emergency services arrived at the scene, and the woman was rushed to Policlinico Umberto I in critical condition, but doctors were unable to save her. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fall, and it is being considered a possible suicide.

Cassation Court Rejects Appeal in Erba Massacre Case

On Tuesday, the Court of Cassation rejected the appeal from the lawyers of Olindo Romano and Rosa Bazzi, upholding the decision of the Brescia Court of Appeals from last July. The appellate court had denied the request to review the case of the 2006 Erba massacre, confirming the life sentences for Romano and Bazzi. The request for a review, which is the final option in Italian criminal law to correct judicial errors, was dismissed because the defense presented no new evidence. Romano and Bazzi were convicted for the brutal killings of four people in Erba, in the province of Como, including a mother, her young son, her mother, and a neighbor. The appeal had argued that the investigations were flawed and there were possible new pieces of evidence, but both requests were denied.

Mattarella’s Strong Stance on Trade Tariffs and Global Cooperation

In a response to concerns about tariffs raised by U.S. President Donald Trump, President Sergio Mattarella emphasized the importance of open markets and international cooperation. Speaking at the “Agricoltura è” village inauguration, Mattarella criticized tariffs as harmful to trade, distorting markets and penalizing quality products in favor of inferior ones. He stressed that market barriers undermine trust and international collaboration, which are vital for global peace. Highlighting Europe’s economic strength, Mattarella called for a determined, calm approach to ensure market openness, aligning with the European Union’s position. He described trade wars as dangerous conflicts, urging the importance of fair, rule-based trade for global prosperity, stressing that the World Trade Organization plays a crucial role in fostering a fairer global market system.

Teachers Criticize Ministry’s National Guidelines Survey for Schools

On March 20th, the Italian Ministry of Education sent a questionnaire to school leaders regarding new national guidelines for 2026-2027, which teachers argue is biased. The guidelines, which replace previous educational programs, have been met with criticism for their traditional approach. The questionnaire contains multiple-choice questions on the clarity and structure of the guidelines but lacks options for negative feedback, leaving little space for teachers to express concerns. Critics, including educators and organizations like CRESPI, argue that the survey is more of a formality than a genuine consultation. The lack of openness to critical feedback has raised suspicions that the results will be used propagandistically to show widespread approval. While some teachers have voiced their opposition, the Ministry continues to push the guidelines despite the backlash.

Unusual Inspections for Tankers After Explosion of Seajewel

Following the explosion that damaged the Seajewel oil tanker in Vado Ligure in February, the port authority of Savona has initiated unusual inspections for tankers in the area. Around ten vessels have been inspected, focusing on the submerged parts of their hulls to ensure integrity. The inspections are in response to the incident involving the Seajewel, where two explosive devices were attached to its hull, causing significant damage. While not all tankers are inspected, those that are undergo a rigorous process involving remote-operated vehicles to scan for potential threats. The attack on Seajewel, believed to involve a diving team planting explosives, has led to heightened security measures and ongoing investigations into possible links to the war in Ukraine and Russian oil sanctions.

Death After Liposuction Leads to Investigation of Surgeons in Rome

A 62-year-old woman, Simonetta Kalfus, passed away on March 18th in Rome due to complications from a severe infection, following a liposuction procedure on March 6th. Kalfus had undergone the surgery, recommended by a friend and anesthetist, Francesco Iandimarino, and performed by cosmetic surgeon Carlo Bravi. After the procedure, Kalfus experienced severe symptoms and was treated at home by the doctors. Despite several visits and IV treatments, her condition worsened, leading to a coma and eventual death. An autopsy confirmed the cause as an embolism due to a widespread infection. The investigation, prompted by her daughter’s complaint, involves three doctors—Francesco Iandimarino, Carlo Bravi, and Eleonora Valletta—suspected of manslaughter, aiding and abetting, and failing to provide assistance. Bravi, already under investigation for previous malpractice, faces further scrutiny after prior health code violations were discovered in his clinic. The case highlights concerns over the quality of medical practices and the safety of cosmetic surgeries.

Truck Fire Kills 92,000 Chicks on Pedemontana Veneta Highway

On Monday, a truck carrying 92,000 chicks caught fire on the Pedemontana Veneta highway near the Bassano Est exit, close to Bassano del Grappa. The driver managed to escape the cabin in time and was unharmed, but all the chicks died from smoke inhalation. The fire reportedly started from the ventilation system on the truck’s roof. The truck, traveling from Cuneo in Piedmont towards Friuli Venezia Giulia, was stopped by the driver who quickly noticed the flames. Emergency services, including firefighters, police, and roadside assistance, quickly extinguished the fire and cleared the road. According to European regulations, each chick must be provided with at least 21 square centimeters of space during transport.

Delayed Medical Examinations and Backlog in Trapani’s Healthcare System Spark National Concern

The healthcare system in Trapani, Sicily, is facing a significant crisis as thousands of medical examinations, including vital cancer screenings, remain incomplete. The local healthcare provider, ASP Trapani, reported that over 20,000 medical visits from 2024 are still pending, and 3,313 histological exams, crucial for cancer diagnosis, have not been delivered to patients. This situation stems from a shortage of specialized medical professionals and an overwhelming backlog exacerbated by underfunding and poor management. In response, the region has initiated plans to outsource some of these exams to other healthcare centers in Sicily, but a national investigation is now underway to determine the scope of the issue, its impact on patients’ health, and potential accountability. Meanwhile, local authorities, including Health Minister Daniela Faraoni, are working to address the backlog, but the delays continue to raise concerns over patient safety and the effectiveness of the regional healthcare system.

Suicides in Italian Prisons Surge as Concerns Grow Over Mental Health and Safety

A 48-year-old inmate from Campania took his own life in Avellino prison yesterday, marking the third suicide in one day across various Italian prisons, including in Trieste and Genoa. This tragic event is part of a broader trend, with six suicides in just the last eight days and 24 overall since the start of the year. The increasing frequency of suicides, particularly among younger inmates and those with mental health issues, has raised alarms. Union representative Aldo Di Giacomo highlighted the urgent need for psychological support in prisons, emphasizing that the lack of resources and appropriate mental health care is contributing to the rising number of deaths. He called for more effective interventions, such as psychological counseling and cultural mediation, and stressed the need for reforms that focus on prevention and rehabilitation rather than just punitive measures. The current situation is viewed as an emergency, with calls for the government to take immediate action to address the crisis in the prison system.

Higher Tax Advances Offset Income Tax Cuts, Warns Cgil

The planned tax cuts for 2023 have been effectively nullified by hefty advance payments that taxpayers will be required to pay in the coming months, according to Cgil. Simulations conducted by the union revealed that workers and retirees will pay between €75 and €260 more in taxes this year, a situation that will contribute an additional €4.3 billion to state coffers. Despite the introduction of new, lower tax brackets, the advances are being calculated based on outdated 2023 rates, resulting in higher-than-expected payments. Although these overpayments will be refunded later, the delay in repayment raises concerns. The Cgil described the situation as an “outrageous injustice,” especially for those with fixed incomes, who will face higher advance payments despite already having regular tax withholdings. The union is calling for a correction of this issue and a re-alignment of the tax rates.

Italy Launches Increased Nido Bonus for 2024: Up to €3,600 Available

Starting today, parents in Italy can apply for the “bonus nido” (nursery bonus), which provides financial support for nursery fees, including public or private daycare and home assistance for children with chronic conditions. The bonus for children born in 2024 offers a significant increase, with eligible families potentially receiving up to €3,600. The amount varies based on the family’s ISEE (income indicator) and the child’s birthdate. Applications can be submitted until December 31, 2025, and can be done online through the INPS website or at patronages. The bonus is paid in monthly installments, with amounts ranging from €1,500 to €3,600, depending on the ISEE and other factors. Families must submit their application before the child’s third birthday, but applications can still be made until the end of the year.

Italy Eliminated from Nations League After 3-3 Draw Against Germany

On Sunday night, Italy’s men’s football team was eliminated from the Nations League after a 3-3 draw against Germany in the quarter-final return leg in Dortmund. The draw, combined with a 2-1 loss in the first leg, sealed Italy’s fate. The match saw a dramatic shift between the first and second halves: Germany dominated the first, scoring three goals, including an absurd one from a quick corner while Italy was distracted. In the second half, Italy responded with goals from Moise Kean and Giacomo Raspadori, but it was not enough to qualify. Despite showing improvements in the Nations League group stage, Italy’s performance against Germany highlighted ongoing weaknesses. The team now faces a challenging World Cup qualification group, with opponents including Norway, Israel, Estonia, and Moldova. Had Italy progressed, they would have been placed in a slightly easier group.

Mattarella Warns Against Protectionism Threats to Italian Exports

President Sergio Mattarella addressed the 44th Forum on Olive Oil and Wine Culture in Rome, warning of rising protectionism that could harm key sectors like wine and olive oil. He emphasized that such measures, including market closures, would unfairly promote “Italian-sounding” products, damaging authentic Italian industries. Mattarella stressed the importance of open markets for fostering peace, pointing out that historically, trade barriers have led to conflict. He also acknowledged the success of Italian products in global markets, urging against nostalgic protectionist tendencies, and underscored that today’s food products are healthier and more regulated than ever.

Filippo Maria Pandolfi, Former Italian Minister and DC Leader, Dies at 97

Filippo Maria Pandolfi, the historic leader of the Christian Democracy party (DC) and former government minister, passed away on Saturday at the age of 97. Between 1974 and 1988, he held numerous government roles, including Minister of Treasury under Giulio Andreotti and Francesco Cossiga, and later Minister of Industry and Agriculture in the cabinets of Amintore Fanfani and Bettino Craxi. Born in Bergamo on November 1, 1927, Pandolfi was also a partisan and earned a philosophy degree in Milan. He is best known for the “Pandolfi Plan,” a complex economic program that facilitated Italy’s entry into the European Monetary System in the late 1970s, a precursor to the euro. After leaving his governmental roles, Pandolfi served as Vice President and Commissioner for Science and Research in the European Commission under Jacques Delors from 1989 to 1993.

Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, won the 19-lap “sprint race” at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, marking his first victory since joining the team at the start of 2025. Starting from pole position, Hamilton dominated the mini race from the outset, finishing ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who started second but was overtaken late in the race. The win was a promising result for Ferrari, especially after a disappointing performance at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne the previous week. In the sprint, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished fifth behind George Russell of Mercedes. The regular race will take place on Sunday, with qualifying scheduled for Saturday morning. The sprint race, part of a new format introduced in 2021, offers points for the top eight finishers, with Hamilton earning eight points for his victory.

Rome Cracks Down on Illegal Tourist Accommodations

Since March 2024, around 300 illegal tourist accommodations have been shut down in Rome following inspections by local authorities, with 30 of these uncovered in the first months of 2025. The crackdown comes as part of increased efforts to combat the spread of illegal structures that evade taxes and lack proper safety certifications. The checks, particularly intensified ahead of the 2025 Jubilee, have revealed widespread tax evasion, with 1,500 violations found out of 6,000 inspections, resulting in a 2 million euro loss for the city. In addition, issues such as unauthorized B&Bs operating like hotels and the improper use of key boxes have been addressed. New rules for short-term rentals are also being enforced, including the mandatory National Identification Code (CIN), to improve tracking and reduce illegal activity in the tourism sector.

Prosecutor Reopens Investigation into Mottarone Cable Car Tragedy

The Verbania prosecutor’s office has reopened the investigation into the deadly Mottarone cable car accident that occurred on May 23, 2021, when a cabin plummeted, killing 14 of the 15 passengers aboard. The investigation had been closed last year, with charges pressed against seven individuals, but in October, the Verbania court returned the case to the prosecutor, requesting modifications to the charges. As a result, the probe has been restarted, and five individuals are now under investigation, facing charges related to transport safety violations, manslaughter, and bodily harm. Notably, certain charges concerning workplace safety have been dropped, and Anton Seeber, the president of Leitner, the maintenance company, is no longer under investigation. Those under investigation include Luigi Nerini, head of Ferrovie del Mottarone, and other key figures from the company and Leitner, with some accused of falsification.

Italian Constitutional Court Rules Single Individuals Can Adopt Children Abroad

On Friday, Italy’s Constitutional Court ruled that the law prohibiting single individuals from adopting children abroad is unconstitutional. The case did not concern domestic adoptions, which remain restricted except in exceptional cases. The Court found that the 1983 law’s exclusion of singles from adopting foreign minors violated Articles 2 and 117 of the Constitution, limiting the potential for an individual to provide a stable and harmonious environment for a child. While singles are now considered eligible to adopt, their suitability will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the court. The ruling emphasizes the importance of considering the adult’s desire to become a parent, while maintaining that the child’s best interests remain the priority. The Court noted that the ban on single-parent adoptions could harm children’s chances of being adopted, especially as adoption requests continue to decline.

Antitrust Opens Investigation into RFI and Ferrovie dello Stato for Alleged Market Abuse

On Friday, Italy’s Antitrust Authority (AGCM) announced the launch of an investigation into RFI, the company managing Italy’s railway network, and its parent group Ferrovie dello Stato for potential “abuse of dominant position” under EU competition regulations. The inquiry follows allegations that RFI has hindered the access of SNCF Voyages Italia, a subsidiary of the French railway group SNCF, to Italy’s high-speed rail infrastructure. SNCF plans to operate high-speed trains in Italy starting in 2026 and claims that RFI delayed or obstructed the approval of routes crucial for competition with Trenitalia, Ferrovie dello Stato’s high-speed service. The investigation was triggered after SNCF filed a complaint last June, accusing RFI of intentionally delaying procedures for assigning high-speed routes. On Thursday, Antitrust officials, alongside the Guardia di Finanza, conducted inspections at RFI, Ferrovie dello Stato, Trenitalia, and Italo’s offices, seeking relevant information for the investigation.

The Rai board of directors has approved the appointment of new directors for several of its major news outlets, including TGR, TG3, RaiNews, RaiSport, and Giornale Radio. The decisions were approved by four directors aligned with the government majority, including CEO Giampaolo Rossi, while the two opposition-appointed directors and the employee-elected director voted against the changes. Pierluca Terzulli, backed by the Democratic Party, has been confirmed as director of TG3, a position he assumed in October 2024 after Mario Orfeo moved to Repubblica. Roberto Pacchetti, close to the League, will lead TGR, while Federico Zurzolo, considered aligned with Forza Italia, will replace Paolo Petrecca at RaiNews. Petrecca, seen as close to Fratelli d’Italia, will take over as director of RaiSport, and Nicola Rao’s appointment to Giornale Radio was also supported by Fratelli d’Italia.

Following inspections by firemen to assess the stability of buildings after recent earthquakes in the Campi Flegrei area, 388 residents in the municipalities of Naples, Bacoli, and Pozzuoli have received eviction orders due to the risk of collapse. The orders, which affect 163 families, are technically 34 in number. Fifty individuals have been accommodated in local hotels, while the others have found alternative housing solutions. The Campi Flegrei area, a large volcanic system, experiences both bradisism (land subsidence and uplift over decades) and frequent earthquakes. While these quakes are typically of low magnitude, their proximity to the surface can cause significant damage.

Italian Teacher Suspended Over OnlyFans Profile

A kindergarten teacher in the province of Treviso has been suspended without pay by her school following accusations of unethical conduct after it was discovered she had an OnlyFans profile, a platform for explicit content in exchange for money. The teacher, Elena Maraga, 29, explained that her private profile was linked to her public Instagram account and accessed by a parent through social media. While some parents criticized her, others defended her, and the school decided to suspend her temporarily. Maraga argues that her personal life should not affect her professional role and claims that there was nothing in her contract prohibiting such content. In response, Italy’s Ministry of Education announced plans to update the public sector behavior code, specifically addressing teachers’ conduct on social media. The Italian Federation of Private Kindergartens also plans to vote on a new ethical code for educators’ social media use.

Italian Parliament Passes Law Limiting Wiretap Duration

On Wednesday evening, the Italian Chamber of Deputies approved a law limiting wiretap durations in criminal investigations to a maximum of 45 days. This new rule, added to Article 267 of the Italian Penal Code, states that wiretaps cannot exceed 45 days, unless extended by the judge for specific reasons. The law does not apply to organized crime or terrorism investigations, where the previous rules still apply, allowing for extensions of 20 days. The law was supported by the right-wing majority but criticized by the opposition, including former National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor Cafiero De Raho, who called it a “shield for criminals” and argued it impedes investigations. The measure, previously approved by the Senate, will take effect once signed by the President of the Republic.

Ukraine Open to Halting Energy Infrastructure Attacks as Peace Talks Progress

Ukraine is willing to suspend attacks on Russian energy infrastructure as part of temporary ceasefire negotiations with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced after a phone call with US President Donald Trump. This follows a similar proposal from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who offered to cease attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure if Ukraine did the same with Russia’s. Zelensky expressed support for this move, seeing it as a potential first step toward ending the war. While the US and Ukraine have discussed a broader 30-day ceasefire proposal, Trump and Zelensky’s call highlighted the critical issue of energy infrastructure, with further talks scheduled in Saudi Arabia. Despite ongoing Russian success on the battlefield, the ceasefire idea is seen as beneficial for Ukraine, particularly as Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power plants cause significant civilian disruption.

Mother and Father of Saman Abbas Speak Out in Court Amid Ongoing Murder Trial

In a dramatic court hearing, Nazia Shaheen, the mother of 18-year-old Saman Abbas, who was killed in Novellara in 2021, described the final moments before her daughter disappeared, claiming she did not witness any aggression. Shaheen, who is facing a life sentence for the murder, denied any involvement in her daughter’s death and insisted she would have stopped any attack if she had witnessed it. She also refuted claims that the family had planned the murder and expressed her grief over her daughter’s loss, stating, “I feel dead inside.” In the same hearing, Saman’s father, Shabbar Abbas, also denied involvement in the crime, claiming the family was unaware of the situation until after the incident occurred. The couple both implicated Saman’s uncle, Danish Hasnain, and her cousins in the crime. The trial continues as the family’s conflicting statements raise questions about who was responsible for Saman’s tragic death.

Five-Year-Old Stella Forced into Foster Care Amid Family Conflict and Alleged Abuse

On a spring morning, a tense and emotional scene unfolded in the Monteverde district of Rome. Stella, a five-year-old girl, was forcibly taken from her home despite her distress and pleas to stay with her mother. Stella had previously been subjected to anxiety and trauma related to her father’s alleged abuse, and had even depicted the violence in drawings. The court decision to place her in foster care, deemed necessary for her “best interest,” was based on a controversial psychological evaluation that downplayed the possibility of abuse. Despite her mother’s claims of a loving and protective home, the court favored the idea of separating Stella from her family, citing “parental alienation” rather than acknowledging the abuse. This case has sparked public outrage, with local residents, journalists, and politicians demanding further investigation into the handling of the case, particularly as Stella suffers from a rare genetic disorder. The decision has raised questions about child protection procedures and the weight of psychological evaluations in cases of potential abuse.

After a decade, Roberto Benigni returned to Rai 1 with his show Il Sogno, where he shared his vision of Europe, life, dreams, and aspirations. The Oscar-winning actor opened with greetings to Mattarella and Pope Francis, wishing the latter a speedy recovery. Benigni humorously addressed a previous comment about Giorgia Meloni, joking about her denying rumors about him and Elon Musk. As the political debate around the Manifesto of Ventotene continued, Benigni cited the document as a cornerstone of Europe’s future, praising its authors—Altiero Spinelli, Ernesto Rossi, and Eugenio Colorni—as visionaries. Emphasizing his belief in European unity, he declared, “I am an extreme European,” describing the EU as “the greatest institution in the last 5,000 years,” founded on the principle of peace. Benigni celebrated Europe’s contributions to humanity, including the invention of logic, democracy, and art, reaffirming the EU as a unique, peaceful, and transformative project.

Meloni’s Response in the Chamber Sparks Tensions Ahead of EU Council

In a heated exchange in the Chamber, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni responded to opposition criticism by defending her vision for Europe, quoting the Ventotene Manifesto. Meloni, addressing her critics, emphasized the importance of Europe’s unity and questioned the opposition’s unclear vision of Europe. The debate became tense as the prime minister cited excerpts from the Manifesto, leading to protests from the opposition, including accusations of misusing the manifesto’s principles. Meloni also criticized the opposition for their stance on defense spending and military involvement in Ukraine, questioning their commitment to NATO. The exchange escalated when she demanded clarity on the Democratic Party’s position regarding Trump’s policies, suggesting that rejecting Trump might imply leaving NATO and the G7. Meanwhile, opposition leaders, including the ANPI, condemned her interpretation of the Manifesto, asserting that it represents the values of anti-fascists and democratic European ideals. The session was interrupted multiple times due to the escalating protests.

Crosetto on Defense and Ukraine: “Security Comes First”

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto commented on the ongoing situation in Ukraine, acknowledging a small step forward in infrastructure protection, while stressing that the ultimate goal is to ensure no part of Ukraine is bombed, including civilian areas. Reflecting on a recent phone call between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, Crosetto emphasized the importance of Ukraine receiving support until Russian attacks cease. He also discussed Europe’s military preparedness, stating that a nation cannot exist without defense, just as it cannot be democratic without a parliament. Crosetto highlighted Italy’s historical reliance on U.S. defense resources and the need for European nations to enhance their military capabilities. He questioned whether countries like Italy or Germany would be able to defend themselves in the event of a prolonged attack, stressing the necessity of a strong defense to ensure national security. He also rejected the notion of pitting defense against other needs like healthcare, arguing that defense is foundational for the existence of a state.

Italy’s “Security Bill” Sparks Debate Over Intelligence Powers

The Italian Senate’s Constitutional Affairs and Justice Committees have approved Article 31 of the “Security Bill,” a controversial law that seeks to strengthen measures against terrorism and organized crime while expanding police powers. The article grants significant authority to Italy’s intelligence agencies, including the ability to obtain confidential information from public administrations and public companies, without providing adequate privacy safeguards. Critics, especially from opposition parties, argue that the law could lead to mass surveillance, forcing universities and hospitals to hand over sensitive personal data. Concerns have also been raised about the potential for intelligence agents to carry out actions that would normally be criminal, such as infiltrating or even leading terrorist organizations, under the guise of national security. The government, however, has defended the law, with proponents arguing that it is necessary for maintaining national security and addressing modern threats. The law still requires approval from both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate before becoming official.

Nine people are under investigation by the Prato prosecutor’s office for the deadly explosion at the Eni facility in Calenzano, Florence, on December 9, 2024. The explosion killed five people and injured 26 others. Seven of those under investigation are Eni employees, while the others are executives from the external company Sergen, which was conducting maintenance work at the time. They face charges of multiple manslaughter, negligent disaster, and injury. The prosecutor, Luca Tescaroli, described the incident as “predictable and avoidable.” The explosion is believed to have been caused by a gasoline engine used during the maintenance work, with additional fuel tankers refueling at the site. The prosecutor claims that Eni and Sergen attempted to hinder the investigation by producing documents to obscure accountability. Among the people investigated are key Eni safety officials and managers from both Eni and Sergen.

The Ugl Ferrovieri, Slm Fast Confsal, and Orsa Ferrovie unions have called for a nationwide strike in Italy’s railway sector on Wednesday, March 19th, from 9 AM to 5 PM.
Draghi Calls for EU Defense Reforms and Competitiveness Boost Amid Global Instability

Mario Draghi, special advisor to the European Commission president, emphasized the urgent need for Europe to adapt to new geopolitical and technological realities. He criticized the impact of rising protectionism, particularly from the EU’s largest trading partner, and highlighted the increasing threat posed by Russia. In a meeting with the Italian Parliament, Draghi called for a unified defense strategy within the EU, focusing on shared military platforms to improve interoperability. He also stressed the importance of integrating emerging technologies, like drones and AI, into Europe’s defense strategy. On economic competitiveness, Draghi pointed to Europe’s high energy costs, particularly in Italy, and urged investment in renewable energy and market reforms. He argued that internal growth should be prioritized over external surpluses, and called for significant reductions in energy bills to support businesses and households across the continent.

On the day of the much-anticipated phone call between Trump and Putin, Israel resumed its military offensive on Gaza with a series of heavy airstrikes, marking the most intense operation since the ceasefire took effect on January 19. Strikes hit various locations across Gaza, including Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, and Rafah. The surprise attacks broke a period of relative calm during Ramadan, with at least 413 casualties reported, many of whom were women and children. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the attacks were in response to a lack of progress in ceasefire negotiations, accusing Hamas of repeatedly refusing to release Israeli hostages. Hamas officials condemned the strikes, calling them a “death sentence” for the remaining hostages and accusing Netanyahu of unilaterally breaking the ceasefire. The Israeli military announced that operations would continue as needed, with the potential for ground troops to resume combat. The escalation follows reports of Hamas General Mahmud Abu Watfa’s death during the airstrikes. The White House confirmed it had been informed in advance of Israel’s actions.

Teenagers Discover Bodies of Elderly Couple in Abandoned Villa Near Verona

Three teenagers exploring an abandoned villa in the hills of Verona stumbled upon a horrifying scene straight out of an ’80s horror film. The group, who had entered the isolated property as part of an “urbex” hobby—an activity where people explore abandoned buildings—found the bodies of an elderly couple. The couple, who had been dead for several months, were likely victims of carbon monoxide poisoning from a fireplace in the house. The villa, located in Monte Ricco near the border between Verona and Negrar, had been abandoned, and the couple, with no close relatives or friends, had remained undiscovered. The teenagers, frightened by their find, alerted authorities, and an autopsy will now be performed to confirm the cause of death. The case is being investigated by Verona’s mobile squad.

Newborn Smuggled into Italy Hidden in Shopping Bag; Four Arrested

A shocking case of human trafficking was uncovered by the Turin police, involving the illegal smuggling of a two-month-old baby into Italy. The baby was hidden inside a shopping bag aboard a ship coming from Tangiers and was not registered as a passenger. Four individuals, including two Moroccan nationals who transported the baby and two others who were housing the infant while awaiting her sale, were arrested on March 12. The investigation was triggered by a tip-off, and the newborn, who had arrived in Italy in October, was hospitalized briefly for checks before being placed with a foster family. Authorities are working to identify the biological mother, believed to be the woman who accompanied the baby on the journey. The two traffickers who brought the child to Italy face charges of violating immigration laws, while the two individuals housing her were arrested for aiding in the crime.

Astronauts Return to Earth After 9 Months on the ISS

At 6:05 AM Italian time, astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who had been stuck aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for over nine months, began their long-awaited return to Earth. Initially arriving in June for an 8-day mission, technical issues with the Starliner capsule turned their stay into an extended exile. Now aboard a SpaceX capsule, the return journey is expected to take about 17 hours. Joining Williams and Wilmore are Nick Hague from NASA and Aleksandr Gorbunov from Russia’s Roscosmos. Remaining on the ISS are the four astronauts who arrived last weekend for the crew changeover: Americans Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Russian Kirill Peskov. NASA is broadcasting the return live.
