Flavio Cobolli’s impressive run at Roland Garros comes to an end. The Italian, in his maiden Grand Slam final, loses in five sets against Alexander Zverev, who wins his first Major title, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Following a rough start, Cobolli replies with resolve and restores equilibrium, matching the German blow for blow. The match remained competitive until the fifth set, when Zverev raises the bar and wins decisively 6-1, completing his redemption after recent injuries and disappointments. During the awards ceremony, the German congratulated the Italian, saying, “My compliments to Flavio; I am confident that one day you will lift up a trophy like this”. Cobolli, evidently moved, replied, “It was an honor to share the court with you. I’m disappointed to have come so close, but I’m still young and want to accomplish something special”.

Kimi Antonelli continues to set new Formula 1 records. The young Mercedes driver wins the Monaco Grand Prix, his fifth consecutive victory, and extends his championship lead. Starting from pole position, the Italian led the race from start to finish, overcoming two safety cars and a red flag that complicated the finish. At the restart, Antonelli left no room for his competitors and crossed the finish line ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Isack Hadjar. This is Italy’s third win in the Principality, after Riccardo Patrese in 1982 and Jarno Trulli in 2004. It was a bitter day for Charles Leclerc, who was forced to withdraw due to an accident, and Max Verstappen, who was halted by a technical problem right at the start. Antonelli’s world championship lead now stands at 156 points, 66 points ahead of closest opponent Hamilton.

Charles Leclerc and Scuderia Ferrari HP will continue their journey together, further strengthening a relationship that has become one of the defining partnerships in modern Formula 1. The Monegasque driver joined the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2016 and has grown within the Maranello-based organization to become one of the team’s most recognizable and beloved figures.

After winning the Formula 2 championship in 2017 and making his Formula 1 debut the following year, Leclerc joined Ferrari in 2019. Since then, he has established himself as one of the sport’s leading talents, delivering memorable victories, pole positions and podium finishes that have earned him a special place in the hearts of Ferrari fans around the world.

At just 28 years old, Leclerc already occupies a significant position in Ferrari’s record books. He ranks second only to Michael Schumacher for both Formula 1 starts and pole positions achieved while driving for the Scuderia.

For Leclerc, Ferrari represents far more than a racing team. It is the fulfillment of a childhood dream. Reflecting on the renewed partnership, he described Ferrari as a second family and emphasized his determination to help bring the Formula 1 world championship back to Maranello.

Ferrari Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur echoed those sentiments, describing the extension as a natural step for both parties. He praised not only Leclerc’s exceptional talent and speed, but also his commitment to the team and the values Ferrari represents.

Jonas Vingegaard wrote a new chapter in cycling history by winning the Giro d’Italia on his first attempt. The Danish champion of Visma-Lease a Bike celebrated his final victory on the streets of Rome, completing the Triple Crown with victories in the 2022 and 2023 Tour de France and the 2025 Vuelta a España. The final stage, a 131-kilometer ride on the traditional circuit through the Italian capital, featured the customary victory parade for the Giro champion. Following a peaceful opening phase, the race got more active, with many breakaway attempts. Victor Campenaerts, Matteo Sobrero, Rémy Rochas, and Rémi Cavagna were among the protagonists, but the peloton eventually took control. In the finale, Filippo Ganna launched a long solo attack from afar, putting the group on edge until the closing kilometers. The Italian time trial champion, however, was caught three kilometers from the finish line, leaving an opportunity for the final sprint. Jonathan Milan became triumphant, finally winning the stage after several placings. The Lidl-Trek sprinter won the sprint ahead of Giovanni Lonardi, completing a prestigious Italian double on the streets of Rome. Felix Gall and Jai Hindley also finished on the last Giro podium, while Paul Magnier won the cyclamen jersey, Giulio Ciccone the blue jersey for best climber, and Eulalio the white jersey for young riders. Vingegaard, visibly emotional during the awards ceremony, dedicated his victory to his wife and children, who were present in Rome. “Winning the Giro, Tour, and Vuelta is something unique. Seeing my family here and celebrating with them makes everything even more beautiful”, the Dane remarked through tears.

Last week, Cagliari’s Golfo degli Angeli held the 38th America’s Cup’s first preliminary race, marking the start of the “Road to Naples 2027”. This historic event for Italy transformed the Sardinian capital into the international sailing center, kicking off the countdown to the final, which will be held in Naples from July 10 to 18, 2027. Luna Rossa quickly sent a strong signal to all of its opponents. The Italian boat emerged victorious in the final match race, where it defeated Team New Zealand and dominated the final day. The crew performed admirably, with the exception of a short scare in the fourth stretch of the course owing to an error.

The Luna Rossa Women & Youth team also performed admirably, placing first in the fleet standings with three wins out of six races, establishing itself as the team to beat. The next event has already been scheduled: the second preliminary races will take place in Naples from September 24 to 27. The real Cup will be held in July 2027 in Naples.

Rome is preparing to welcome one of the most spectacular and innovative sporting events on the international stage. On September 11 and 12, 2027, the international sailing championship SailGP will stop in Ostia, turning the “sea of Rome” into the setting for high-speed races featuring the futuristic F50 catamarans.

The official announcement was made today at the Ara Pacis Museum, where the event was presented. Taking part in the presentation and speaking on stage were SailGP CEO and co-founder Sir Russell Coutts, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, Lazio Region President Francesco Rocca, Rome’s Councillor for Major Events Alessandro Onorato, Lazio Region Councillor for Land Protection, State Property and Assets Fabrizio Ghera, and members of the Red Bull Italy SailGP Team: Chairman Gian Luca Passi, Board Director Assia Grazioli Venier, Team CEO Jimmy Spithill, along with a delegation of athletes.

The Rome event will be the first Italian stage of a three-year partnership that will place Ostia at the center of the global sailing circuit until 2029, with the aim of relaunching the Roman coastline also from a tourism, economic and infrastructure perspective.

During the press conference, Russell Coutts explained why Rome is an ideal host city for the circuit: “The capital is a city with a unique appeal, able to combine unparalleled history and cultural heritage with a vision oriented toward innovation. It is precisely this balance between tradition and modernity that makes it an ideal venue for our championship.”

Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, speaking to ilNewyorkese on the sidelines of the presentation, emphasized the strategic value of the event for the future of Rome’s seaside area:

“For three years, Rome will be the capital of sailing. The sea of Rome will enter an extraordinary circuit, and this fits into the broader relaunch of our coastline. We are very pleased with the choice of Rome because it will be a major event and, above all, another opportunity to enhance our wonderful sea.”

Gualtieri also highlighted the institutional collaboration with the Lazio Region: “This is work we are carrying out together, as often happens between institutions that have a duty to cooperate positively in the interest of the area. On the sea of Rome, we are also working on the new Parco del Mare: another piece of a strategy that finally aims to restore value to an extraordinary coastline.”

The mayor also underlined the visual impact of the event: “The catamarans exceed 100 kilometers per hour, and the races can be watched from very close up. From both a sporting and visual point of view, it will be a unique event.”

There was also great enthusiasm from Gian Luca Passi, who spoke to ilNewyorkese about the importance of SailGP’s arrival in Italy:

“We are very proud to have reached this first milestone and to have received incredible support from the institutions, from Roma Capitale and from the Lazio Region. With the Red Bull Italy SailGP Team, we want to inspire new generations and show that today sailing can be chosen as a real profession, just like football, tennis or golf.”

Passi added: “Bringing SailGP to Italy will open up many opportunities. Ostia will host the race on September 11 and 12 next year, while Rome is doing extraordinary work on hospitality and tourist reception. For an international league like ours, this is essential.”

During the press conference, Councillor Alessandro Onorato instead highlighted the economic and media impact of the event, explaining that the competition could generate more than 25 million euros in related economic activity, with an international audience that, according to the circuit’s estimates, will come 68 percent from abroad.

Onorato also announced redevelopment works worth more than 10 million euros for Ostia, with projects that will remain as a benefit for residents even after the event. Legacy projects and initiatives dedicated to families and local associations are also planned.

The goal of the institutions is clear: to use major sports events as a driver of urban, tourism and social regeneration. Gualtieri himself, again speaking to ilNewyorkese, reiterated how strongly Rome is investing in sport at every level: “Major sporting events have extraordinary economic and image-related impacts. From the Ryder Cup to the Italian Open tennis tournament and now SailGP, Rome wants to be increasingly recognized as a capital of sport, without forgetting grassroots sport and the redevelopment of the city’s sports facilities.”

With the F50 catamarans ready to race along the Roman coast, Ostia is now preparing to become one of the new world capitals of sailing.

Lazio’s season ended in bitter disappointment as Inter defeated the Rome club 2-0 in the Coppa Italia final at the Stadio Olimpico.

Without suspended manager Maurizio Sarri on the bench, Lazio had promised a determined performance but instead spent most of the night pinned back by Inter’s superior possession and intensity. Their defensive game plan unraveled almost immediately after an unfortunate own goal by Adam Marusic handed Inter an early advantage.

Things went from bad to worse when Nuno Tavares carelessly lost possession in defense, allowing Lautaro Martínez to capitalize and double Inter’s lead. The mistake echoed similar defensive lapses that had already hurt Lazio earlier in the season.

Offensively, Lazio offered very little throughout the match. Their first real chance arrived only in the 75th minute, when substitute Boulaye Dia broke through on goal but fired directly at Inter’s backup goalkeeper.

Inter managed the remainder of the game comfortably, confirming their superiority both technically and mentally. For Cristian Chivu, it was another major success at the Olimpico within just a few days, while Lazio were left reflecting on a deeply disappointing campaign in which the Coppa Italia had represented perhaps their final chance at redemption.

The defeat raises serious questions about Lazio’s mentality and ability to respond under pressure, especially in the biggest moments of the season.

Luciano Darderi’s dream run at the Italian Open continues. The Italian player reached the first Masters 1000 semifinal of his career after defeating Spain’s Rafael Jodar in a grueling three-set battle delayed by rain and interrupted by smoke drifting from Rome’s Olympic Stadium.

Fresh off his stunning comeback victory over world No. 3 Alexander Zverev, Darderi once again showed remarkable resilience. In the opening set, he recovered from a 2-5 deficit in the tie-break to claim the advantage in front of an increasingly electric home crowd.

The second set appeared to be heading toward another Italian celebration when Darderi earned two match points. But Jodar responded brilliantly, fighting back to take the set 7-5 and force a decider.

The third set, however, belonged entirely to the Italian. After a marathon opening game lasting more than twelve minutes, Darderi secured an early break for 2-0, igniting the crowd despitethe late hour. Jodar, struggling physically with cramps and fatigue, gradually faded as Darderi dominated the remainder of the match, closing out the final set 6-0.

With the victory, Darderi becomes the tenth Italian player to reach at least one Masters 1000 semifinal and the eighth Italian in the Open Era to make the semifinals in Rome.

He will now face Norway’s Casper Ruud on Friday, with a place in the final suddenly within reach. For Italian tennis, Darderi’s breakthrough is yet another sign of a generation capable of competing at the very highest level of the sport.

Jannik Sinner maintains his strong performance at the 2026 Italian Open. With a resounding 6-2, 6-3 victory over Andrea Pellegrino in the round of 16, the world’s number one secured a spot in the quarterfinals, where he will face either Andrey Rublev or Nikoloz Basilashvili. With the victory in the all-Italian derby, the South Tyrolean equals Novak Djokovic’s record of 31 consecutive Masters 1000 triumphs. Andrea Pellegrino’s journey in Rome comes to an end after what is nonetheless considered one of the most important tournaments of his career. Sinner emphasized the emotional significance of the match following the encounter: “The derby in Italy is always unique. Andrea and I met seven years ago, and it was a pleasure to meet again on one of the most beautiful courts in the world”. The South Tyrolean champion then praised his opponent: “It’s a pity he was only in the round of 16, it would have been nice to be there later in the tournament. He played a great tournament”. Lastly, Sinner discussed the upcoming matches: “The quarterfinals are already a significant round. The rest day will be helpful for me, particularly after matches played in windy and challenging conditions”.

The controversy about revenue distribution in professional tennis is heating up again on the eve of the Italian Open, one of the main clay-court tournaments held in Rome before Roland Garros, the season’s second Grand Slam. The correlation between total tournament revenue and the percentage awarded to players is once again at the center of the debate. The most critical front is being led by Jasmine Paolini, the reigning champion in Rome, who has chosen to use direct language to clarify an issue that, for American supporters who are not as familiar with the global tennis structure, extends beyond mere prize money. Grand Slam tournaments generate revenue through television rights, sponsorships, and ticket sales, but many athletes believe the redistributed percentage is still too low. “It’s a popular topic among players”, Paolini added. “We’re advocating for greater fairness in safeguards, not just for award money, but also for pensions, maternity leave, and other aspects of work stability. These are areas where the ATP and WTA are making progress, whereas the Grand Slams are trailing behind”. The Italian tennis player stresses an important point: the increase in prize money, which is frequently cited as a positive sign by organizers, is not keeping up with the growth in overall earnings. “The Grand Slams are increasing prize money, but not in proportion to how much they actually earn”, she stated. “At the same time, they aren’t addressing core issues like pensions or maternity leave. That’s why we’re working to improve things”. This also raises the possibility of a boycott, which was previously speculative but is now being debated more seriously. “If we’re all in agreement and truly united”, Paolini continued, “a boycott could become a viable option. At some time, it may be the only means to exercise our rights”. This role is supported by other tour players. Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one, highlighted that “the spectacle depends on the players” and that without them, “there would be no tournaments or this type of entertainment”, hence seeking a larger portion of the earnings. Iga Świątek called the boycott “an extreme measure”, but found the plan to increase players’ revenue share to 22% “reasonable”.
