And there is a young woman who takes care of everyone, forgetting to wonder how she is. Three stories. Three different fragilities. Three people who felt overwhelmed, to understand that asking for help does not mean surrendering. From these stories was born the project “Emotions in Athens – A show on invisible fragility”, the initiative promoted by the Third Mission Area of the University of Palermo in collaboration with the SIASP – Integrated Athens Service for the Psychological Support, which has recorded the whole exhausted. At the Steri Monumental Complex, last night, real experiences of psychological discomfort experienced by students of the University became three theatrical monologues, through an artistic elaboration realized in full respect of anonymity and privacy. A moment of community in which the University opened itself to citizenship, promoting a shared reflection on the signs of youth fragility and the importance of listening. On stage, the actors of the CreAzione Teatro Company – Elena Cristiani, Davide Puccetti, Enrico Jacopo Testoni and Francesco Paolino – gave voice to the three monologues, accompanied by the dancer of Teatro Massimo Yuriko Nishihara and pianist Claudia Costanzo. Artistic direction and texts by Silvia Celano. But at the centre they were left: three stories that, although born from individual experiences, managed to speak to many. To give a concrete dimension to the question of psychological support the data of the SIASP, directed by Professor Salvatore Gullo, and presented last night by Professor Maria Stella Epifanio. Since the start of the service, requests have grown steadily. In the last year, from July 2025 to July 2026, 772 requests for help were recorded, 17% more than the previous year. The discomfort crosses different fields of study. The most significant percentages are among the students of Engineering (15.7%), Psychological Sciences, Pedagogical, Physical Exercise and Education (13.7%), Humanities (12.1%) and Medicine (9.7%). Even more significant is the picture that emerges from clinical screenings carried out on a sample of students. 85.8% exceeded the clinical threshold for depressive symptoms, according to the PHQ-9 test, while 78.5% reached the clinical cut-off for anxiety symptoms, measured through the GAD-7. For global psychological distress, detected through CORE-OM, the percentage of students who have passed the clinical threshold instead reaches 95.9%. Important numbers that the University of Palermo has decided to intercept in time, before they can turn into isolation, abandonment of studies or even more complex suffering. “”Emotions in Athens” – said the rector Massimo Midiri – was not only a moment of show, but an act of profound social responsibility. We brought these stories on the stage to break the silence and remember that behind a request for help there are professionals ready to help. I strongly wanted the SIASP to be born as an integrated multidisciplinary service, through the involvement of the branch of Psychological Sciences, Pedagogical, Physical Exercise and Formation (SPPEFF); of the services offered by the Center Orientation and Tutorato (COT), of the professionals of BIomedicina, Neuroscienze and Advanced Diagnostica (BIND) and of the University Medical Ambulatory. «In 2026 – Maria Stella Epifanio del SIASP has emphasized – the service counts on 10 structured psychologists-psychotherapists and 5 specialists supervised, with differentiated paths according to the needs of the students. ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Rector of Sapienza University of Rome, Antonella Polimeni, participated today in Jerusalem, at the Custody of the Holy Land, to the meeting with the leaders of the religious communities dedicated to the progress of the archaeological research project and restoration of the complex of the Holy Sepulcher.

To present the work done and the perspectives of the research was Professor Francesca Romana Stasolla, scientific manager of the archaeological mission Sapienza, together with Professor Pietro Vannicelli and the research group, composed of numerous young scholars and young scholars who, with different skills, participate in the field activities and the subsequent work of study, documentation and interpretation. The highly multidisciplinary nature of the project involves archaeologists, historians, philologists, diagnostic experts and archaeometry and numerous other scientific skills.

During the visit to Jerusalem, the Rector was received in private audience by His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem. He also met with Francesco Ielpo, Custos of the Holy Land, Domenico Bellato, Consul General of Italy in Jerusalem, and the referents of the headquarters of Jerusalem of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), as part of the consolidated relations between Sapienza, the religious communities and the Italian institutions present on the territory.

The mission of Wisdom has been working permanently in Jerusalem for over four years and has gradually consolidated, in a context of extraordinary historical, religious and institutional complexity, a relationship of trust with the Communities that guard the Holy Sepulchre and with the different realities present on the territory. A role that emerged with particular clarity also during today’s meeting: the mission now represents a scientific point of reference and Wisdom an interlocutor recognized for the knowledge, protection and valorisation of a world heritage, respecting the different responsibilities and sensibilities that live in this place. The mission had already received in 2019 the task of carrying out for the first time a systematic archaeological survey of the complex; the excavation work subsequently entered into live within the project of restoration of the flooring of the Basilica. After the archaeological excavation phase, the research continues with great intensity through the study of finds and structures, the documentation of data, archaeometric analysis and the reconstruction of the different phases of the long history of the complex. The investigations combined stratigraphic excavation, analysis of structures and materials, archive research, advanced diagnostics and three-dimensional documentation.

In the course of the presentation were also illustrated the developments of the restoration and requalification of the infrastructure and the pavement of the Basilica, the activities previewed for the control and maintenance of the different areas of the complex and the start of the restoration of the wooden door of entrance to the Holy Sepulcher. Particular attention was paid to the first volume of the Hagia Polis Project series. Excavations at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Volume I. Project and Methodology, which restores the scientific and methodological complexity of the project, from excavation and conservation procedures to the integrated documentation system, from the study of sources and findings to environmental and archaeological analyses.

“Having been able to conduct these investigations in the Holy Sepulchre represents for Wisdom an extraordinary privilege and, together with a great responsibility – says Rector Antonella Polimeni -. In a place where history, faith and memory are inseparable, the rigour of research must accompany humility, listening and respect. In these years the Sapienza group has been able to build, through scientific competence and daily dialogue, relationships of trust that represent themselves a precious heritage. This work shows how university can put scientific knowledge at the service of knowledge, conservation and dialogue.”.

The trust accorded to Wisdom by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, the Custody of the Holy Land and the Armenian Patriarchate has made it possible for a scientific experience that, due to the complexity and delicacy of the context, assumes a value that goes beyond the strictly archaeological results. In the course of the meeting the proposal was finally shared to develop, together with the religious communities, initiatives for the valorization and dissemination of the results of the research, through finds, documentation, models, digital reconstructions and audiovisual content.

The meetings also confirmed the will of the Custody and other institutional realities involved in strengthening the scientific dissemination of the results achieved in these years, ensuring a rigorous, accessible and respectful return to the complexity of the place. In this path the will to continue to avail of the scientific contribution of Sapienza, providing expertise, method and documentation to contribute to a shared and scientifically based reading of the data. The goal is to make the heritage of knowledge produced by the project accessible to an international public, maintaining the religious meaning of the Holy Sepulchre and the continuity of his spiritual life.

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Sometimes just add a few atoms to completely change the behavior of a molecule. This is demonstrated by a study published in Nature Communications, the result of the collaboration between the Officina Institute of Materials of the National Research Council (Cnr-Iom) and international partners.

Researchers have discovered why two small chemical changes make a ribozim, a particular RNA molecule capable of speeding up chemical reactions, up to fifteen times more efficient: a discovery that can help design more performing artificial ribozims, for example in biotechnology, as well as better understand the behavior of this RNA molecule in the early stages of life evolution.

Ribozymes are special molecules: unlike most RNAs, transporting or regulating genetic information, they are also able to speed up modification reactions of RNA bases, playing a role similar to that of enzymes. However, designing a ribozim from scratch is extremely complex and artificial ribozims obtained often show limited efficiency. For this reason, many studies are dedicated to understanding how to increase their activity and improve their performance.

The research group studied a ribozim called MTR1, whose efficiency had been improved with the addition of two small methyl groups, in precise points of its structure. A methyl group is one of the smallest existing chemical units, consisting of only one carbon atom linked to three hydrogen atoms. Although it is formed by just four atoms, when added to the MTR1 ribozima, it deeply alters its biological activity. So far, however, it was unclear why these changes had such a marked effect.

“Our work shows that these chemical changes – which have the effect of drastically increasing ribozim activity – do not intervene directly in the chemical reaction: instead, they make the structure of the RNA more rigid, allowing the atoms involved in the catalysis to maintain the optimal layout. Understanding this mechanism gives us a concrete principle to design more efficient ribozimi”, explains Jana Aupic (Cnr-Iom), the first author of the study.

Thanks to computer simulations and the determination of the three-dimensional structure of the molecule, the team has, in fact, discovered at theomistic level that the two methyl groups make ribozim less flexible, keeping in the correct position the atoms involved in the reaction. In this way the reaction occurs more easily and more efficiently. Precisely having understood this mechanism could prepare the way for the design of new artificial ribozymes for the development of increasingly efficient catalysts, with possible future applications in biotechnology and RNA-based technologies.

“Not only: these knowledge will also help us to better understand the role that RNA might have played in the early stages of life evolution, as the results obtained also strengthen one of the most accredited assumptions about the origin of life, the so-called RNA world hypothesis,” adds Alessandra Magistrato (Cnr-Iom), who coordinated the research team.

According to this theory, before the development of proteins, RNA molecules played the role of catalysts in early biological reactions. Understanding how small chemical changes affect its activity also helps to reconstruct the possible mechanisms that have favored the evolution of the first forms of life on Earth.

The study is the result of close international collaboration with the research group led by Claudia Höbartner, of the University of Würzburg (Germany), for years engaged in the design and development of artificial ribozimi. The study was carried out thanks to a PNRR funding under the National Centre for the Development of Gene Therapy and Drugs with RNA Technology.

NAPOLI (ITALPRESS) – More than 400 scholars from 50 universities and 10 countries gathered to discuss how artificial intelligence is transforming relationships, learning processes and educational contexts. The sixth edition of the REN – Research Education Network International Conference (September 4-6), organized by CASE – Center for Advanced Study in Education of the Department of Education and Sport of the Pegaso University, opened today in Naples. The work will continue in Ischia until September 6th where the Thinking Room will take place dedicated to the themes of the 2026 edition.
The inaugural ceremony was introduced by the institutional greetings of Gaetano Manfredi, Mayor of Naples and Pierpaolo Limone, Rector of the Pegaso University, with the intervention of Francesco Peluso Cassese, President of the Scientific Organizing Committee of the REN Conference. During the conference, an official award was awarded to the Mayor of Naples in recognition of his historic commitment to education.
Keynote speaker of the day were Derrick de Kerckhove, a sociologist of international fame and expert in digital culture, director of Media Duemila and Observatory AllMedia and already professor at the University of Naples Federico II, and Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia, archbishop and theologian, president emeritus of the Pontifical Academy for Life, long committed on the themes of the family, bioethics and the relationship between technology and human life.
Since 2021, the REN Conference has grown to become one of the main events of the national and international scene dedicated to educational research, with a particular focus on innovation and social inclusion. BRUSSELS (BELGIO) (ITALPRESS) – The European Research Council (CER) announced the winners of the last start-up grant competition, which awarded 705 million to 421 researchers at the start of the career in Europe. Grants will support young scientists during a crucial phase of their career, helping them pursue ambitious ideas and build their own work teams.

The results highlight Europe’s growing attraction for world-class research talents: 21 successful researchers currently established outside Europe will move to the EU and to the countries associated with Horizon Europa (increasing compared to 11 last year) to implement their projects.

Ekaterina Zaharieva, European Commissioner for Start-ups, Research and Innovation, said: “Congratulations to all candidates chosen. I am particularly pleased to note that 21 researchers currently established in the United States and Canada intend to move to Europe to continue their work.”.

“Their decision reflects Europe’s growing interest in border research and is an encouraging sign that the EU’s ‘Choose Europe’ initiative is helping to attract the next generation of scientific talent, while strengthening Europe’s position as a privileged destination for excellence research.”.

This year’s competition collected a record number of 4,807 proposals, an increase of 22% compared to 3,928 last year. Due to strong competition, only 8.8% of the proposals could be financed. 169 researchers based in the United States this year compared to 116 of the previous call

. Selected projects cover a wide range of research sectors, from life sciences and engineering to social and human sciences. The new beneficiaries will be hosted by universities and research centres of 25 EU Member States and associated countries, particularly Germany (89 grants), France (38), Switzerland (36) and the Netherlands (33).

The winners include 84 Germans, 50 Italians, 30 French and 24 Spanish, as well as researchers from 48 other nationalities. Grants should create more than 3,000 jobs in the work teams of new beneficiaries.

ROMA (ITALPRESS/ECONOMIADELLOSPAZIO) – A European funding of 1,67 million euros will bring to Trieste a new group dedicated to the study of the formation of galaxies, together with new skills and an extension of the computing capacity. It is the relapse of the ERC Starting Grant 2026 assigned to Thales Gutcke for SPROUT (Small Protogalaxies Revealing Origins and Unfolding into Today’s Dwarfs), a project that will be developed at the INAF – Trieste Astronomical Observatory, with a sharing with the University of Trieste.

The investment of the European Research Council (ERC) will cover five years of activity and will allow Gutcke to move from the Institute for Astronomy of the University of Hawaii in Trieste. The resources will also serve to form a new team, through the recruitment of three post-doc researchers and two doctoral students, and to expand the centre of calculation of the Observatory.

The result thus assumes a dimension that goes beyond the single scientific project. The award brings to the INAF of Trieste a researcher from an American institution and concentrates in the centre of Trieste funding, human capital and computational capacity for a border research on the evolution of the Universe.

SPROUT aims to reconstruct the link between the first small galaxies formed in the Universe and the observable dwarf galaxies today. To do so, the project will develop high-resolution cosmological simulations, designed to directly describe phenomena that in larger scale simulations should be treated through approximations.

“The first galaxies of the universe were, by necessity, dwarf galaxies and were the seeds from which the people of galaxies we see today began to develop,” explains Gutcke. “SPROUT will develop state-of-the-art cosmological simulations, able to achieve unprecedented resolution, to directly model these phenomena in detail, overcoming the approximations used so far in large-scale simulations.”.

The research aims to create a bridge between the galaxies identified in the early Universe by the James Webb Space Telescope and their possible descendants in the local Universe, studied through observation programs such as Euclid, DESI and Rubin/LSST. The simulations will numerically evolve these systems to investigate how the first protogalassies have given rise to the different populations of Nane galaxies observed today.

It is right on the small scales that SPROUT will try to increase the level of detail of the models. In Nane galaxies, decisive processes take place to understand galactic formation: explosions of supernovae, expulsion and increase of gas, production of the first heavy elements, formation of dense stellar clusters and birth and growth of black holes.

“Nine galaxies will also be small, but it is within them that some of the most fundamental processes of galactic formation take place,” Gutcke notes. The simulations envisaged by the project, he adds, will allow to model these processes “to an unprecedented resolution”, directly facing a part of the physics that the cosmological models on a larger scale must necessarily approximate.

The availability of computational infrastructure becomes an integral part of the investment. The development of the Trieste computing centre is not only an operational support for the ERC-funded project, but increases the local resources needed to develop particularly demanding numerical simulations and train new researchers in this area.

The SPROUT case is part of a highly selective European programme. In the ERC Starting Grant 2026, the European Research Council awarded a total of EUR 705 million to 421 researchers and researchers, selected from 4,807 applications. The success rate stood at 8.8%.

The winners represent 52 nationalities. Among them are 50 Italians, while 22 researchers have chosen a university or an Italian research body to develop the project financed. According to ERC estimates, the grant set should contribute to the creation of more than 2,700 jobs in the research groups involved.

A further figure concerns the European ability to intercept skills currently active outside the continent: 21 winners, equal to 5% of the total, come from non-European institutions and 20 of them from the United States. The transfer of Gutcke from Hawaii to Trieste falls directly into this dynamic.

It is also important to read the institutional function of Starting Grant. Competitive financing does not only support an individual scientific programme: it can determine the location of research activities, promote international mobility and finance the construction of new teams at host organisations. In the case of SPROUT, this mechanism translates into five new positions between post-doc and doctoral, as well as strengthening the computational resources of INAF in Trieste.

“Discovering that SPROUT obtained funding was an almost imperceptible moment, enclosed in a simple email arrived early in the morning,” says Gutcke. “Now it is turning into a new chapter. My family and I are preparing the bags to move from Hawaii to Trieste, practically across the world.”.

The personal transfer corresponds to the construction of a new scientific structure. “I will have the opportunity to build an entire research group from scratch at the INAF,” Gutcke concludes. This is the main institutional relapse of the grant: 1,67 million euros distributed over five years transform a project of theoretical astrophysics into new research capacity located in Italy, inserting Trieste into the European network that will use simulations and great observation programs to reconstruct the evolution of the first galaxies.

Altogether there are over 63,200 beds activated through the Housing Plan of the Ministry of University and Research, exceeding about 3,200 units the objective of 60 thousand provided by the PNRR. The additional places compared to the target, read in a note of the ministry, will be financed with national resources made available by the MUR on impulse of Minister Bernini. “Thanks to this increase, the offer of accommodation for university students is more than doubled than the one available at the start of the Plan”. The first 33 thousand beds “are already realized and will be available for students, who will be able to access them through the regional authorities for the right to study or according to merit criteria, contacting the managers of the residences”. For the additional approximately 30 thousand beds, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, which manages the second tranche of the notice on behalf of the MUR, has completed the subscription of all acts of obligation. The new accommodation will be available in 2027.

“We have achieved a strategic goal of the PNRR, an ambitious goal to increase the offer of university accommodation. Today – explains Bernini – we can say that that target was not only achieved, but exceeded. It is the result of a huge work, built together with the extraordinary Commissioner Manuela Manenti, and the collaboration between institutions, public and private individuals who have chosen to invest in university housing. An extraordinary effort that has allowed to reverse a paradigm: to pass from the realization of 40 thousand beds in 20 years, to 60 thousand in three; from 2 thousand beds a year to 20 thousand. But the value of this result – the Minister continues – goes beyond the numbers. Each new bed place means strengthening the right to study by giving a girl or a boy an extra chance: choosing the university he wants, even away from home, without the cost of living becoming an obstacle.”.

The Bando housing has predicted that at least 30% of the new beds are reserved for students who are capable and worthy without means, identified through the rankings of the institutions for the right to study. For the others there are lower rates of at least 15% compared to average market values. The more than 33 thousand beds already made are distributed throughout the national territory. Particular attention is paid to the Mezzogiorno: 60 thousand beds financed by the resources of the PNRR, at least 40% is intended for the regions of the South. The intervention is part of the wider MUR strategy to increase the offer of university residentiality, which also includes investments made through Law 338/2000. The rule provides for co-financing by the State up to 75% of the total cost for interventions such as new constructions, renovations, adjustments and purchase of properties to be allocated to students. Since 2023, at national level, through the V Bando of Law 338/2000, more than 10 thousand beds have been co-financed with over 800 million euros.

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – From 1 to 4 September will be held at the University of Fortaleza, Brazil, the 15th World Conference on Cultural Rights, co-organised by the Department of Law and Digital Society of the Unitelma Sapienza University. This year’s edition is dedicated to a 20-year budget of the Ibero-American Charter on Cultural Rights. As usual, speakers from all over the world will participate in the conference, as well as several Culture Ministers and senior public leaders working in culture. The meeting of Fortaleza reflects our commitment to strengthening international academic cooperation on cultural rights, immaterial cultural heritage, community participation and the comparative right of cultural heritage. The conference also confirms the role of the Global Universities Alliance for Cultural Rights as a growing platform to link research, education, political dialogue and shared actions between countries and legal traditions. To open the works there will be, for UnitelmaSapienza, Professor Pier Luigi Petrillo, ordinary of comparative public law and director of the UNESCO Chair on the intangible cultural heritage.

The second day of the work will host the first international meeting of the Global Universities Alliance for Cultural Rights, the network, founded by UnitelmaSapienza and UNIFOR during the Rome Conference of November 2025, and which today brings together the leading experts of cultural rights from 20 universities, from Australia to Argentina, from Brazil to Holland, from Tunisia to Great Britain, from Algeria to Iran, from Mexico to Turkey to Portugal. The meeting of the Global Alliance, dedicated to the theme of “Human (in)security”, “will bring together scholars from different regions and legal traditions to explore how contemporary forms of human insecurity affect the enjoyment and protection of cultural rights”, explains Professor Petrillo, co-founder of the Alliance. “From conflicts, displacements and climate change to restrictions on civic spaces, technological transformation and emerging cultural insecurities,” explains the teacher, “the meeting will address cultural rights both as threatened rights and as instruments for dignity, resilience, participation and peace.” The works will be opened by Humberto Cunha, ordinary of constitutional law to UNIFOR and co-founder of the Global Alliance, by Alexandra Xanthaki, Special Rapporteur of the United Nations on Cultural Rights and effective member of the Global Alliance, and by Sara di Luca, collaborator of the UNESCO Chair of Unitelma Sapienza and executive manager of the Global Alliance.
