Federbeton, CO2 capture key lever for decarbonization

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – “Decarbonizing the cement industry is a necessary path to have sustainable works and infrastructures, not giving up the quality of a Made in Italy product. However, although many levers are immediately available, the path is still long and the industry’s commitment is not enough: we need national homogeneity in the application of regulations so that carbon neutrality is an effectively achievable goal. “This was said by Margherita Galli, Federbeton’s Head of Environment and Sustainable Development, during the Zero Carbon Technology Pathways – Report 2024 event organized by the Milan Polytechnic.”CO2 capture, for example, is a key lever for the decarbonization of the cement sector, because it makes it possible to act on the 60-70% of direct CO2 emissions that derive from the same chemical process reactions,” she added. “We are talking about a technology that, although unavoidable, entails substantial investments and longer implementation times than other levers. “In the short and medium term, it remains necessary to focus on solutions that are already available, such as the use of alternative fuels derived from waste that cannot be recycled nor reused. Regulatory and cultural work must be done in this regard. If used in the cement production process, alternative fuels are diverted from landfilling, incineration or export to other countries, concretely applying the principles of the circular economy, with positive consequences on emissions, with the same quality and performance of the material. – continued Galli – While in some European countries fossil fuel substitution exceeds 70%, in Italy it is limited to 25.5%. A gap that does not depend on technological barriers but rather on complex administrative processes of uncertain duration. Making the application of these administrative simplifications homogeneous throughout the country means contributing to the decarbonization of a sector that in Italy alone employs more than 35,000 people,” Galli concluded.
