PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – A theoretical-practical course on Level I medically assisted procreation (PMA) techniques served as a comparison for various figures working in public and private health care in Palermo. It was hosted today at the Marina Convention Center in Palermo for an event organized by Andrea Biondo’s Level I PMA center, CBR of the Candela clinic in Palermo, and Giovanni Ruvolo of the Center for Reproductive Biology in Palermo. The course was attended by institutional figures and some of the leading experts in the field: course chairman Vito Chiantera; President of the Medical Association, Toti Amato; Antonio Maiorana, head of the Civic Arnass; Laura Giambanco, head of Ingrassia Hospital; Tito Gueli Alletti head of Buccheri la Ferla Hospital; Giulio Sozzi, head of Cefalù’s Giglio Hospital; and Ettore Cittadini, a luminary in the field of gynecology.”The course is an in-depth study of Level I medically assisted procreation techniques, which are usually considered to be of a minor category,” clarifies Giovanni Ruvolo, embryologist, “compared to Level II and III techniques, which are more complex. We therefore wanted to emphasize this type of Level I techniques, which are less involving for the couple, and for the woman in particular, both physically and emotionally, and which, if applied correctly, can lead to excellent results, obviating the need to resort to a therapeutic burden typical of higher techniques. It is therefore an opportunity to bring together representatives of the various health disciplines that revolve around a couple, from gynecologists to biologists, passing through endocrinologists, andrologists and obstetricians. “The latest data in the literature show how Level I techniques are resurging and what their importance is in the field of infertility,” explains Biondo, “we are excited about the presence of Professor Cittadini, a pioneer of the PMA technique in Italy, with the first birth in 1984. Intrauterine insemination is a technique that, both by guidelines and by law, has a great importance, thanks to the reduction of the pharmacological and economic impact on patients, through the use, in a first step, of the simplest and most straightforward techniques. “Also speaking, Barbara Cittadini, President of AIOP Sicilia: ” It is an important moment of meeting and discussion on a sensitive issue and one that is very dear to me. I am happy that a future perspective is given to a story that, in Italy, began thanks to the commitment, passion and tenacity of my father, who succeeded in creating a school and a movement around him that has collected a witness that must be preserved and cultivated, especially, today that the problems of infertility seem to have an ingravescence that affects more and more people, who must be helped to be able to live the gift of parenthood.” Appreciations on the initiative also came from the Rector of the University of Palermo Massimo Midiri: “This is a very important course, the first that brings together different specializations, not only in the gynecological field but also in the biological field, because the issue of medically assisted procreation is a social issue, which invests a generation that chooses to have children at an increasingly advanced age. Creating a network, a perspective of methodologies that can also make use of university expertise is for us a point of great importance, so that even in Palermo we can create a perspective for interested patients, who can only then have a guideline and professionals ready to solve their problems.””The problem of infertility and procreation today involves thousands of women, also because of the trend of having children increasingly late in life, and I think it is fundamental that a region like Sicily – explains the President of the course, prof. Vito Chiantera -is able to give concrete answers to this phenomenon. The course is a great first step, a way to introduce young specialists to the issues of medically assisted procreation, a branch of great relevance, but one that requires absolute dedication and great seriousness in dealing with delicate issues, which make the difference between a happy family and a childless one.” “I think today’s is a remarkable initiative, allowing for discussion at all levels, from the hospital sector to the university sector, via the private sector. To discuss globally and collectively, in an event with such a large turnout, significant issues such as Level I PMA techniques is, in my opinion, fundamental,” concludes Professor Ettore Cittadini.
