ROMA (ITALPRESS) – A free way to finance the third call of the Italian Science Fund (FIS 3), the national program that supports the most innovative basic research. The Ministry of University and Research has published the rankings: 326 projects of excellence financed, for a total investment of more than 432 million.
Of the projects approved, 110 concern the Life sciences sector for a total of 148.6 million, 115 that Physical sciences and engineering for 152,8 million, and 101 the Social sciences and humanities area for 130.7 million. The call is also diversified according to the career stage of researchers. In this respect, 200 Starting Grant projects were funded for emerging young scholars for 228 million, 54 Consolidator grant for growth researchers for 76.7 million, and 72 Advanced grants for established scientists for 127.3 million.
“Research is a powerful engine of growth and development. Congratulations to the researchers who won the FIS3 call: the country is at your side because you are the ones who give energy to innovation. You are transforming ambitious ideas into projects that can open new paths for the future. Your insights are the heart of innovation,” said the Minister of the University and Research, Anna Maria Bernini.
“Today this engine returns to move decisively thanks to concrete resources, clear strategies and a network of centres of excellence where knowledge translates into progress and enterprise. With the law of Budget we finally guarantee continuity and stability to finance, within a vision that looks at Europe and international cooperation. The new Single Research Fund – Bernini added – offers certainties to researchers: transparent criteria, notices published by 30 April and defined resources. In 2025 we are talking about 460 million, plus 150 million for the PRIN, now annual bands with minimum guarantee. A decisive step to give Italian research the time, tools and stability needed to generate innovation and future”.
The winners of the call will be hired or contracted by universities and research agencies who will host their projects. The FIS rules provide that, in the absence of a working relationship already active in Italy, the selected researchers are inserted in role according to current legislation, ensuring their full integration in the national research system. In addition to this ordinary path, the ministry promotes the activation of direct call procedures, which will affect about 25% of the winners hosted in Italian universities, offering universities an additional tool to quickly recruit high-level profiles.
The selection activities were carried out according to international evaluation standards and with the contribution of the National Research Evaluation Committee (CNVR), which ensured consistency, scientific rigour and impartiality throughout the process. The Ministry has already foreseen for the next two years the fourth edition of the FIS call with a financial allocation that will further strengthen the commitment in support of the basic research.
