ROME (ITALPRESS) – Sofia Goggia returns to winning ways after nearly a year. The Italian triumphed in the Beaver Creek Super-G, valid for the 2024/2025 Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup. The 32-year-old from Bergamo crossed the finish line in 1’03″90 beating Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami (92nd World Cup podium), second at 0″48. Third was Austria’s Ariane Raedler at 0″55. Seventh career SuperG victory (25th in total in World Cup, with 56 podiums) for Goggia, who also takes the red specialty bib. It was a real triumph for her about a year after her last bad accident (knocked out tibia and malleolus of her right leg). “I am very happy with this performance, compared to the downhill I was able to ski better, I put a mix of competitive nastiness, technique and a lot of instinct on the slope. I’m grateful to be back in the World Cup, it was a tough challenge in the past months, now I’m still here and the injury is not on my mind. I came down with great solidity. I knew I had to be careful in the first five gates and then unleash my horses, and I did. It was perhaps one of my best supergiants ever. The most important victory is always the next one, however, it is clearly a milestone in my journey,” the words of the Italian, who finds victory again after 11 months (downhill Altenmarkt-Zauchensee on January 13, 2024). In contrast, her last success in SuperG was dated December 8, 2023 (St. Moritz).
Great day for the Italian colors. Federica Brignone, in spite of a discipline not really in her league, finished fifth at 0″64 ahead of Marta Bassino (sixth at 0″80). Also in the top ten is Elena Curtoni (ninth at 1″14), who returned to racing yesterday after a year of physical problems. In between are Norway’s Kajsa Lie (seventh at 0″95), France’s Romane Miradoli (eighth at 1″13); then Switzerland’s Michelle Gisin (ninth tied with Curtoni).
Just outside the top 10 is Roberta Melesi (11th at 1″17). Also in points were Laura Pirovano (18th at 1″60) and Vicky Bernardi with bib number 38 (24th at 2″13). Sara Thaler is 34th at 3″04. Out were both Nicol and Nadia Delago, the latter starring in a bad fall, fortunately without consequences, in the final. After yesterday’s surprising fourth place in the downhill, U.S. Lauren Macuga does not go beyond 12th (+1″40). Czech Ester Ledecka, sixth yesterday, finishes 16th at 1″54.
Austrian Ricarda Haaser fails to repeat the great run with high bib in the downhill and goes out in the last gates. Also out, in addition to the aforementioned Delago sisters, are Germany’s Kira Weidle-Winkelmann, Austria’s Nina Ortlieb, Bosnia’s Elvedina Muzaferija and Australia’s Greta Small. In great difficulty were New Zealand’s Alice Robinson (26th at 2″23) and Poland’s Maryna Gasienica-Daniel (36th at 2″48).
Goggia is back (again): warn all of the Italian’s rivals.
