PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – At the Mediterranean Fair in Palermo, in the heart of Expomedicina 2025, the G.B. Dusmet Foundation presents the first edition of the Dusmet Prize – Life Science and Social Innovation, an event that combines science, faith and civil liability in a shared reflection on the future of care and innovation.
“Not a simple prize – the promoters explain – but a day of thought and dialogue on how technology, knowledge and entrepreneurship can be instruments of inclusion and dignity, returning to science its human and community value. Innovating means not only introducing new technologies, but also creating new forms of relationship, care and social organization. Innovation, both technological and social, is such only when it effectively improves people’s lives and strengthens links between individuals and communities.”.
The appointment is Wednesday 29 October, at 10 am, at the Mediterranean Fair of Palermo – Hall 20, Hall Lampedusa. The initiative promoted by the Dusmet Foundation was born with the aim of building, starting from Sicily, an ecosystem of ethical and social innovation, in which research and technology are oriented to the common good. During the day, experts from bioethics, economists, entrepreneurs, researchers and representatives of the ecclesial world will discuss the great themes that cross the paths of the Dusmet Prize: health and well-being of fragile communities, innovation in socio-health services, e-health, home care, welfare of proximity and culture of care. At the heart of dialogue, the relationship between artificial intelligence and ethical responsibility, health (also digital) as universal law, community welfare as a leverage of cohesion and the social impact of science as a measure of progress.
For the G.B. Dusmet Foundation, “innovating not only means introducing new technologies, but rethinking the ways in which knowledge and solidarity generate common value. Innovation can be technological or social, but it is authentic only when it improves people’s lives and makes the care system more fair, accessible and human.”.
To guide the comparison, reference figures of the Pontifical Academy for Life, the Order of Doctors of Palermo, the CNR, the University of Catania, the HEAL Italy Foundation and the Marea – Isola Catania Foundation, coordinated by the Scientific Committee of the Dusmet Foundation.
Alongside the prize, the Foundation recognises a fundamental value to the role of information. Through the headline DusmetNews.it, which represents the official channel of the Foundation, the commitment translates into a continuous account of ethics in innovation, research as shared good and the experiences of social impact that arise in the territories. “The testate — direct emanation of the cultural project Dusmet — undertakes to make information about science, innovation, welfare, artificial intelligence and sustainable development, offering readings and insights in the light of the Christian spirit of Blessed Giuseppe Benedetto Dusmet, who invited to combine knowledge and charity, progress and human dignity. In this sense, the DusmetNews editorial head and the Dusmet Prize also become an opportunity for public reflection on the value of information as a space for dialogue, discernment and construction of communities, so that science can meet the conscience and technology by finding its human face,” emphasised by the Foundation.
The Dusmet Prize – Life Science and Social Innovation celebrates projects and people who put technology at the service of life. “An opportunity to affirm that innovating means not only creating, but taking care of: people, territories, relationships. ‘Innovating is an act of love’, means looking at science not as a power to exercise, but as a responsibility to live; not as an end, but as an instrument of justice and solidarity. It also means building communities of practice, in which knowledge is cultivated through collaboration, listening and reciprocity — as the Benedictine tradition teaches, to which Blessed Giuseppe Benedetto Dusmet belonged, for which work, knowledge and care of the other are different forms of the same service to the common good -. In this spirit, the Dusmet Foundation builds bridges between those who generate knowledge and those who receive their fruits, combining ethics and technological progress in a single promise: doing good, doing good things,” they highlight the promoters.
