In January, Istat estimates, for trade with non-EU27 countries, a cyclical decrease for exports (-1.0%) and an increase for imports (+3.6%). The month-on-month decrease in exports is due to lower sales of energy (-9.4 percent), consumer durables (-4.4 percent) and non-durable goods (-4.0 percent); on the other hand, sales of intermediate goods (+1.8 percent) and capital goods (+1.3 percent) are growing. On the import side, the cyclical increase is explained by higher purchases of nondurable consumer goods (+12.7%), intermediate goods (+7.6%) and consumer durables (+7.0%) while imports of energy (-4.7%) and capital goods (-1.9%) decrease. Exports grew 2.7 percent year-on-year in January (it was +4.2 percent in December 2024), with higher sales of intermediate goods (+9.2 percent) and consumer non-durable goods (+3.3 percent) supporting growth. Imports show a strong trend increase (+17.9%), generalized and larger for consumer durables (+42.9%) and nondurable consumer goods (+27.1%) and intermediate goods (+27.0%).The trade surplus with non-EU27 countries is +252 million (+3,031 million in the same month of 2024). The energy deficit (-4,577 million) is slightly higher than a year earlier (-4,410 million). The surplus in the interchange of non-energy products shrinks from 7,441 million in January 2024 to 4,829 million in January 2025.
