ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Seventy years after his death, the Republic pays tribute to Alcide De Gasperi, one of its Founding Fathers, honoring his extraordinary contribution to the cause of freedom, the building of democracy and a peaceful and more just international order.” This was stated by President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Alcide De Gasperi’s passing.”Born in a context – the Austro-Hungarian Empire – and in a land characterized by the presence of multiple cultures and which would go through all the events of the 20th century – including its union with Italy and then its new detachment, for almost two years, during World War II with its inclusion in the Alpenvorland a province of the Nazi Reich – De Gasperi defended the Italian-ness of his people and lavished his political commitment in the affirmation of as much protection of the rights of every community, under the banner of respect for the identity and dignity of every person,” the head of state continued, “realizing valuable conditions for affirming principles of international understanding and cooperation.”He paid with imprisonment for his opposition to the establishment of the Fascist regime, and he never gave up pursuing those ideals aimed at achieving a state order based on respect for fundamental freedoms that later led him to be recognized as a reconstructor of the Fatherland. His skills as a statesman proved to be unparalleled in the aftermath of World War II, where within complex international negotiations, he was able to achieve balances that once again affirmed the dignity of Italy severely compromised by dictatorship, with the alleviation of the consequences of treaties imposed on a Nation whose destinies Fascism had wanted to unite with those of the Nazi Third Reich,” Mattarella concluded. We also owe to his farsightedness Italy’s adhesion to the Atlantic Alliance, an instrument of consolidation of democracies, as well as, at the same time, the start of the process of European integration – his constant goal – in which the Italian Republic played a leading role, handing down to the generations paths of peace.Italy and its people express gratitude to Alcide De Gasperi, who so profoundly marked its progress.”
