Middle East crisis deepens, Meloni convenes G7 meeting

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “In light of the worsening crisis in the Middle East, I urgently convened a summit at Palazzo Chigi yesterday to discuss the situation and assess the necessary measures. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani remotely connected, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, the delegated authority for security services, top intelligence officials, the Prime Minister’s diplomatic adviser, and, in connection, the Italian Ambassador to Israel, Luca Ferrari.
While condemning the Iranian attack on Israel, we shared deep concern about the ongoing developments and appealed for responsibility from all regional actors, calling for the avoidance of further escalation.” This was reportedly said by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the opening of the Council of Ministers meeting.
“Italy will continue to strive for a diplomatic solution, including in its capacity as chair of the G7. I have convened a leaders’ level meeting for this afternoon,” she added. “The goal is the stabilization of the Israeli-Lebanese border through the full implementation of Resolution 1701. In this framework, Italy has called on the UN Security Council to consider strengthening the mandate of the Unifil mission in order to ensure the security of the border between Israel and Lebanon in implementation of existing UN resolutions.”
According to Meloni, “It is equally urgent to reach an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages in line with resolution 2735. In yesterday’s meeting we also discussed the securing of Italian citizens and UNIFIL contingent soldiers. The government table was convened on a permanent basis to constantly monitor the development of the situation and take necessary measures in a timely manner.”
