Middle East, Guterres “Ensure that the agreement is implemented.”

NEW YORK (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – “I welcome the announcement of an agreement to secure a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza. I pay tribute to the mediators, Egypt, Qatar and the United States of America, for their dedicated efforts in negotiating this agreement. Their unwavering commitment to finding a diplomatic solution was key to achieving this important result.” This was said by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, speaking at the UN Headquarters.
“I call on all parties involved to live up to their commitments and ensure that this agreement is fully implemented. Since the beginning of the violence, I have called for an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages. Our priority now must be to alleviate the enormous suffering caused by this conflict,” Guterres stressed. “The United Nations stands ready to support the implementation of this agreement and to intensify the provision of continued humanitarian aid to the many Palestinians who continue to suffer. It is imperative that this ceasefire removes significant security and political obstacles to aid distribution in Gaza, allowing us to support a substantial increase in urgent, life-saving humanitarian aid.”
“The humanitarian situation has reached catastrophic levels, and I call on all parties to facilitate the rapid, uninterrupted and safe delivery of humanitarian aid to all civilians in need,” the U.N. secretary-general explained. “For our part, we will do all that is humanly possible, mindful of the serious challenges we face. However, we also expect our efforts to be supported by other humanitarian actors, the private sector and bilateral initiatives.”
For Guterres, “this agreement represents a crucial first step, but we must mobilize all efforts to promote broader goals, including preserving the unity and integrity of the occupied Palestinian territory. Palestinian unity is essential to achieving lasting peace and stability, and I stress that a unified Palestinian government must remain a top priority.”
“I urge the parties and all relevant partners to seize this opportunity to establish a credible political path toward a better future for Palestinians, Israelis and the entire region. Ending the occupation and achieving a negotiated two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security, in line with international law, UN resolutions and previous agreements, remains an urgent priority,” he added.
“Only through a viable two-state solution can the aspirations of these peoples be realized. I pay tribute to the civilians who lost their lives, including U.N. staff members and humanitarian workers,” Guterres concluded. “The United Nations remains steadfast in its commitment to support all efforts that promote peace, stability and a more hopeful future for the people of Palestine and Israel and for the entire region.
