ROME (ITALPRESS) – Three out of four Italian women athletes made the finals at the European Modern Pentathlon Championships under way in Madrid. Aurora Tognetti (Carabinieri), Alice Rinaudo (Fiamme Oro) and Valentina Martinescu (Junior Asti) made it through the semifinals held today with encouraging evidence ahead of the competition that will award the 2025 continental title on Friday.
In the “A” semifinal, Tognetti, Italian senior champion and fifth in the World Cup final, led the race, finishing in the lead with 1431 points thanks to the best score in fencing (250) and the second fastest time in the hurdles (29″43). There was also a good showing for 21-year-old Martinescu from Asti, who was sixth a month ago at the World Junior Championships, who closed the A semifinal with 1417 points, the best time in swimming (2’11″60) and the second best score in fencing (244). In the B semifinal Rinaudo, first in fencing (250) and second in swimming (2’18″83) finished eighth with 1398. Stopping in the semifinals, however, was Maria Beatrice Mercuri (Fiamme Oro), penalized by a mistake in the Tilting Ladders (ladders) in the hurdles event.
Tomorrow’s men’s semifinals, starting at 9:35 a.m., will feature Roberto Micheli (Fiamme Oro), Giorgio Malan (Fiamme Azzurre) and Matteo Bovenzi (Aeronautica Militare). The Azzurri will start from the Seeding Round fencing score: Malan finished with 22 wins and 13 losses, Micheli 18/17, Bovenzi 14/21.
