“Ready Diabetes,” complication prevention campaign resumes

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – Pronto Diabete, the national campaign that, from Sept. 23 to Oct. 18, makes available to patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus free specialist consultations with a diabetologist at specialized centers throughout Italy, which can be booked by calling the toll-free number 800 042747, resumes. Also active is the website www.prontoDiabete.it.L The initiative, sponsored by the Italian Society of Diabetology (SID) and the Association of Diabetes Physicians (AMD), with the adherence of Diabetes Italy and Sistema Farmacia Italia, in partnership with AstraZeneca, aims to raise awareness among the approximately 4 million patients with Type 2 Diabetes in Italy about the importance of keeping their disease under control with a view to improving its management, promoting correct patient information and education, and preventing the onset of renal and cardiovascular complications by encouraging early diagnosis. The campaign last June offered free specialist consultations in 47 centers nationwide to about 1,500 people with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, 30 percent of whom were between 50 and 64 years old and 61 percent over 65. Due to its success, it is being offered again with a second round of visits, ahead of World Diabetes Day, which falls on November 14. Particular attention should be paid to the cardiovascular and renal complications of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, including heart failure and chronic kidney disease, diseases that are closely interconnected and strongly impact patients’ quality of life. Worldwide, 70 percent of deaths are caused by chronic diseases, and in Italy, about 24 million inhabitants had at least one chronic disease in 2021, a number that will continue to increase in the coming years. Diabetes, heart disease and chronic kidney disease (closely related conditions) are among the most prevalent chronic conditions, so it is important to identify, diagnose and then treat patients in the most timely and effective manner. The campaign also aims to inform patients and the public about the current approach in the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, which, in addition to the treatment of the overt disease, also aims to prevent its complications, while also promoting the education and empowerment of patients and caregivers. The exact duration and manner of conducting consultations will be at the discretion of the Specialists of the participating Centers, depending also on their assessment and the specific characteristics of the afferent patients. The use of the consultations does not entail priority for the booking of subsequent diabetological visits or diagnostic services, which must then be booked in accordance with the procedures provided by the local health authorities, and will not interfere with the relationship with the patient’s usual diabetes center of reference.
