The number of inmates who have committed suicide in prison since the beginning of the year and up to September 16 is 67 (of which 2 occurred outside the institution). This is the finding of the report of the National Guarantor of Persons Deprived of Liberty, noting that this is a high figure compared to the same month of September 2023 when 48 suicides were recorded (an increase of 19 deaths) and to the month of September 2022 by 7 deaths). Analyzing the personal data, it is noted that of the 67 people who died by suicide, 65 were men and 2 were women. Regarding nationality, 36 were Italian (accounting for 54 percent) and 31 were foreigners (accounting for 46 percent) from 15 different countries. The most prevalent age groups were 26-39 years old (30 people) and 40-55 years old (18 people); the remainder were distributed in the 18-25 years old (7 people), 56-69 years old (11 people) and over 70 years old (1 person). It is noted that the average age of people who committed suicide is about 40 years old. The length of stay at the institute in which the event occurred was then analyzed: it turns out that 35 people, (or 52%), committed suicide in the first 6 months of detention; of these: 7 within the first 15 days, 5 of them even within the first 5 days of entry. Of the 67 suicide events: the regions most affected are Campania and Lombardy with 8; followed by Campania and Emilia Romagna and Tuscany 7; Veneto 6; Lazio and Sardinia 5; Piedmont and Liguria 4; Abruzzo, Calabria and Sicily 3; Apulia 2; Marche and Umbria 1.
