US proposal to close gap on Gaza deal “No more wasting time”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – At the end of the round of meetings held in Doha over the past 48 hours, from the United States comes a proposal “that fills the remaining gaps” with the goal of concluding a ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the release of hostages and detainees. This was made known by the White House, which with the support of Egypt and Qatar presented both sides with a proposal consistent with the principles established by President Biden on May 31, 2024 and Security Council Resolution Number 2735. “This proposal builds on areas of agreement from last week and fills in the remaining gaps in a way that allows for rapid implementation of the agreement,” the White House explained. Working groups will continue technical work in the coming days on implementation details, including how to implement the broad humanitarian provisions of the agreement, as well as specifics related to hostages and detainees. Senior officials from our governments will meet again in Cairo by the end of next week with the goal of finalizing the agreement under the terms proposed today. As the leaders of the three countries said last week ‘there is no more time to waste nor any apology from anyone for further delays. It is time to release the hostages and detainees, begin the ceasefire and implement this agreement’. The path is now set to achieve this, saving lives, bringing relief to the people of Gaza and easing regional tensions.” However, the understanding leading to the ceasefire appears to be increasingly uphill. Indeed, a Hamas spokesman told Al Jazeera TV that “there is still no positive signal” from the ongoing negotiations in Doha, because Israel “adds conditions, poses new issues.” Meanwhile, in an effort to strengthen the road mapped out to achieve this result, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to arrive in Israel on Sunday, where he is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday.
