ROMA (ITALPRESS) – 2026 opens with a less sign for the car market used: with 438.975 transfers of ownership (dates waiting for consolidation), the month of January recorded a -6,7% compared to 470.308 of January 2025 (-9.9% on 2019), the strongest decline from 40 months to this part.
Net transfers decrease by 7.3%, while minivoltures mark a -5.8%. Among the engines, in the month diesel and petrol share 1st place on the podium, to 39.2% of altitude; the first loses 3.9 points, while the gasoline recovers 0.2 p.p. Hybrids confirm a sustained growth, touching 11.2% in the month; they follow Gpl and methane respectively to 5.7% and 2.1% in the month; BEV and plug-ins rise to 1.1% and 1.5% in January.
In January transfers per contractor confirm the trend of the preceding months: exchanges between private individuals/businesses, which remain largely predominant, are slightly growing and account for 57.6% of all ownership passes. In parallel, 1,1 points are lost from those from operator to final customer, to 37,7% in the month. The same are also penalized by the exchanges coming from auto-immatricolazioni that increase of 0,5 points of quota (3.9% in the month), while they recover 0.1 points from the rental (0.9% overall in the month).
In January the analysis by region confirms unchanged the podium: in the first place Lombardy, at 16.1% of altitude (+0.5 p.p.) and in the second Lazio to 9,6% (-0.2 p.p.). In third position we find Campania with 9.3% of altitude (-0.1 p.p.) and in 4th place Sicily returns, stable at 8.3%, followed by Veneto at 8.2%.
In January, the net transfection of cars with more than 10 years of age earned 1,2 points, at 49.8%. The car from 6 to 10 years is stable, at 17.4%. The cars from 4 to 6 years represent 9.8% (-1.9 p.p. compared to January 2025); 11.6% the share of cars from 2 to 4 years (+0.1 p.p.), and 4.0% that of cars from 1 to 2 years (-0.3 p.p.). The cars up to 1 year go up to 7.4% in the month (+0.9 p.p.).
Overall, car transfers up to 4 years of age cover 23.0% in January, 0.7 points in more than the same month 2025. On the front of the minivoltures, it grows of 0.6 points to 29.5% the share of the rites of cars from the operators, and drops to 53.4% (-1.7 points) the share of private or other companies that permutate their car. There are 0.7 points of cars coming from auto-immatricolazioni (to 1.7%), while they earn 0.9 from Long Term Rental (to 11.1%) and from Short Term Rental (to 4.3%).
Among the mini-voltures diesel cars maintain leadership in the month, but fall by 4.2 points to 41.0%. The petrol engine earns 0.6 points at 32.8%. The Gpl climbs to 5.4%, the methane yields 0.3 points to 1.8%. In sustained growth the minivoltures of hybrid cars, to 15.0%. Plug-in hybrids and electrics are also positioned at 2.1% (+0.5 points) and 1.9% (+0.7 p.p.).
Also among the minivoltures recovers the share of the cars with more than 10 years, to 37.1% of the total: 0.5 points in more than January 2025. Cede 0.1 points the band from 6 to 10 years (to 19.1%) and loses 2.5 points that from 4 to 6 years, to 10.9%. Retrieve 0.2 points the band from 2 to 4 years (at 16.4%); the one from 1 to 2 years drops to 4.8% (-0.5 p.p.), while recovers 2.4 points that up to 1 year, to 11.7%. Overall, the minivoltures of cars up to 4 years of age cover 32.9% in January, 2.1 points in more than the same month 2025.
