4 November, Mattarella: “New conflicts impose the creation of a common European defence” / Video

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “On November 4th marks the date on which the armistice of Villa Giusti ended the World War that had bloodshed Europe, with the crowning of the resurgent dream of the unity of Italy. The Day of National Unity and Armed Forces that we celebrate today is a moment of remembrance and expression of the gratitude of the country as the citizens in uniform did, fighting to make Italy an independent and free nation, inspired by democratic values and peace. The contribution of the Armed Forces in over a century and a half was valuable for the affirmation of the international role of our country. With great professionalism and humanity, in recent decades, they have intervened, on mandate of the international community, in relief to peoples and in contexts where it was urgent to work for peace”. So the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in the message sent to the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto.

“Today new conflicts have overlooked Europe and the Mediterranean, interpellating the security frame built in the post-war period and the institutions placed at its head. The danger of enlargement of the bloody conflict unleashed by aggression to Ukraine by the Russian Federation imposes great attention and a challenging effort to adapt the military instrument, for the creation of a common European defence force which, in close cooperation with the Atlantic Alliance, is a security tool for Italy and Europe. The tireless work of the Armed Forces along the entire span of the enlarged Mediterranean crisis, where situations of contrast and fragile tregue remain, remains fundamental. On this day, a moving thought goes to those who have fallen, sacrificing their lives for Italy. It is a feeling that recalls above all the young generations, so that they are aware of the need for commitment to defend the values of our Constitution. With these sentiments, I address the most intense and attended wish of all Italians to soldiers, sailors, airmen, carabinieri, financiers and civil defense personnel who work with professionalism and dedication every day for the highest good of the Republic. Viva le Forze Armate, viva l’Italia” concludes President Mattarella.
