Australian Open, good first for Sinner: Gaston retires after two sets

MELBOURNE (AUSTRALIA) (ITALPRESS) – Jannik Sinner advances in the second round of the Australian Open, the first Slam of the season that has seen him winner in the last two editions. The blue was ahead 6-2 6-1 after 68 minutes of play when his rival, French Hugo Gaston, number 93 of the ranking, was forced to retire. His second-round opponent will be James Duckworth. In tabellone with a wild card, the 33-year-old Australian, number 88 of the world, defeated the Croatian Dino Prizmic for 7-6(4) 3-6 1-6 7-5 6-3 after 4 hours and 21 minutes of play. Sinner is ahead 2-1 in the previous ones, but all rather dated: the first in 2020 in Cologne with success of the South Tyrolean, the other two in 2021 with victory of Duckworth at the Masters 1000 in Toronto and rematch of Sinner in Sofia.

THE MONTEPREMI OF TORNEO

“I saw it wasn’t serving at high speed in the second set. That’s not how one wants to win. Hugo is a talented player with a great touch. I am happy to be back here, I thank the public.” The number 2 of world tennis, Jannik Sinner, said after the Australian Open victory against Hugo Gaston, forced to retire under 6-2 6-1. “I felt good, I prepared myself in the right way and I worked a lot. I played performances, but the official games are different. I started well, at first with some tension. Now you have to think a bit about enjoying the field, you train for this”, he added.
