Board of Peace “On the rocks”

by Vincenzo Petrone (*)

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Heads of Government are trying to be protagonists in international politics especially in relation to the image building that they carry out in internal politics. And they’re good. Then come the crisis and the net decisions to be taken and international politics also dictates events and internal policy profiles. The embarrassment of our President of the Council with respect to Trump’s invitation to Italy to join the Board of Peace in Gaza is a case of species. President Meloni apparently has not yet decided to go to Davos where he hoped to meet Trump and try to mediate on Greenland. As well as Trump’s invitation to enter the Board of Peace for Gaza. But accepting the invitation would be to cancel Italian credibility as a mediator between Europeans and Americans in the NATO crisis. Go to Trump the same and refuse the invitation for this Board? Impossible. In short, a labyrinth, from which Giorgia Meloni can probably come out only disappointing Trump, especially after the very firm speeches of yesterday at the Forum, Von der Leyen, Macron and the magisterial Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney. And also Mattarella yesterday in the quattr’occhi interview at the Quirinale, may not have advised her to take a different position.

After tomorrow in Rome, the German Chancellor Merz will express itself in the same terms. With Macron and Merz who refuse to participate in the Board, who can imagine that Italy accepts and gets photographed next to Putin and Lukashenko in a consesso that maybe meets in Mar-a-Lago? Not that the rest of the company of the other 51 Countries invited to this club trumpiano is from Palco Reale, although for membership it is necessary to be at least wealthy, considering that the access fee is 1 billion dollars. About the prerogatives of the members then, does not escape the statutory clause for which President Trump is assigned the mandate of Chairman of the Board of Life. And yesterday he also stated that his creature “may replace the United Nations”. Instead of the Security Council he would have an Executive Council composed, always alive, by his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, by his business partner Steve Witkoff, two real estate owners. And, only European, by Tony Blair who has a consulting firm.

President Meloni could not sign an initiative that would be in Europe and would be in contradiction with decades of Europeanist politics of Italy and its adherence to the principles of multilateralism, with the constant support to the United Nations under which he has been acting for over 60 years we send troops of peace in the world. In conclusion, the dilemma of Davos and this invitation to the Board of Peace bring with it difficult choices and the personal relationship of President Meloni with Trump can turn into a force shirt.

But there are also important derivatives of internal policy. A comparison and search for common ground with the opposition is certainly already in progress, as the country requires and how Mattarella must have suggested. To help President Meloni play an important role in Europe, NATO and the relationship with America will require something more than the humour of the government exponent who yesterday issued a brilliant concept on the threat of new duties to those who refuse to enter the Trump Board: “Better on French wines than on Italian ones.” Italy must continue to try to mediate but as a great country proudly anchored in Europe. Trump and Putin want to divide it and then disintegrate it and Italy is not Orban Hungary.
