Migrants, “With the IOIM innovative models for flow management”

NICOSIA (CIPRO) (ITALPRESS) . The Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi attended today in Nicosia at the first informal Council of Justice and Home Affairs under the Cypriot Presidency. “One of the themes placed at the center of this meeting was that of the repatriates – said Piantedosi – and in this context is inserted the positive Italian experience that, thanks to the collaboration with the OIM and the Countries of transit of migrants, has developed an operating model that in the last two years, has favoured the voluntary repatriation assisted of approximately 65,000 people, from the territories of Algeria, Libya and Tunisia to the Countries of origin. Acting in this direction means continuing to finance European projects to implement assisted volunteer repatriations by integrating them with development initiatives in partner countries.”.

The Ministers also discussed other issues such as the possibility to gradually resume repatriations in Afghanistan and Syria and the possible internal security measures to be taken to safeguard the Schengen area and limit secondary movements.
On the edge of the Council, Minister Piantedosi met with the Director-General of the IMO Amy Pope and stressed that “thanks to the joint work programme with the IMO, we are continuing to develop innovative models for the management of flows in countries outside the EU, strengthening assisted volunteers and migrant reintegration activities in the countries of origin.”.

In the afternoon, Piantedosi had a fruitful interview with the Minister of Asylum, Migration and the Belgian Social Integration Anneleen Van Bossuyt with whom he confronted the future implementation of the European Migration and Asylum.
