WASHINGTON (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – US Vice-President, JD Vance, spoke today in Minneapolis in a meeting with economic leaders, representatives of federal and local law enforcement agencies and ICE operators, reassessing the Trump administration’s immigration line and denouncing a strong climate of tension on the territory due, in his opinion, to lack of cooperation by state and municipal authorities. Vance explained that the aim of the visit was to “low the temperature and reduce chaos”, while still applying immigration laws. According to the vice president, federal agents are doing “an incredible job”, often told in a distorted way by the media, and operate in a “extremely difficult” context, made of pressure and intimidation. While recognising that controversial episodes may occur, Vance pointed out that it cannot be generalized or deleted by law enforcement. In his intervention he firmly condemned the actions of the “agitators”, defending the right to protest peacefully but warning that those who attack an agent will be pursued “with the utmost rigor of the law”.
He cited recent episodes in Minneapolis, such as that of two out of service ICE agents who, while in a restaurant, would be spotted online and surrounded by protesters, forcing a security intervention to rescue them. “You can’t even go to eat without fearing for your life, this is the climate that you created,” he said. Vance also reported talks with local entrepreneurs, underlining how many tension situations arise from the lack of mutual understanding. He cited the case of an irregular immigrating operation near a production plant, which generated fear among workers, unaware of what was happening. “It is understandable that employees and employers are scattered,” he said, recalling, however, that the application of laws can take place “without chaos”, provided that there is collaboration between levels of government. According to the Vice-President, in many cities and states, both republican and democratic, this cooperation exists and allows to avoid escalation. In Minneapolis, instead, the lack of local support would have forced to employ numerous federal resources not only for the application of norms, but for the protection of the same agents.
“In a normal context, the local police would help an assaulted federal agent. Here, instead, the officers are told not to intervene,” he denounced. Responding to journalists’ questions, Vance also addressed specific cases that provoked controversy, such as that of a child indirectly involved in an ICE operation. The vice president clarified that the minor was not arrested and that the father, uneven immigrant, had fled at the time of the arrest. “Do not arrest anyone who violates the law only because he has children would mean giving total immunity to anyone who is a parent,” he observed, while recognizing the traumatic impact these situations have on children. On the matter of alleged immunity for federal agents, Vance dismissed all charges, reasserting that any illegals are investigated with regular procedures and in compliance with the right process. He defined “a tragedy” the death of Renee Good, but underlined the complexity of the case and the need to assess the facts in their context, without summary media processes. Vance finally reiterated the need to hold two principles together: protect minors indirectly involved in operations and, at the same time, enforce the law “without prejudice and fairness”. “The chaos does not help anyone – he said – and can only be reduced by real cooperation between federal, state and local authorities.”.
