NEW YORK (USA) (ITALPRESS) – Just 4 days after his intake in New York, the new Permanent Representative of Italy at the United Nations, Ambassador Giorgio Marrapodi, officially presented the credentials letters to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. During the ceremony and the subsequent meeting with the Secretary General, Ambassador Marrapodi stressed “the renewed commitment to further consolidate and develop the excellent partnership between Italy and the United Nations in all areas of organisation activity” reads in the note. Secretary General Guterres expressed “a great appreciation for Italy’s contribution to the United Nations system, for the effective action of our country at the Glass Palace and in the main multilateral and international forums.” Italy is the seventh contributor to the UN ordinary budget and the peacekeeping budget, the tenth in terms of total contributions to the UN system (obligators, volunteers and others), the first contributor of blue helmets between Western countries – especially UNIFIL.
“Our country houses a considerable part of agencies and structures of the Onusian system including the food pole in Rome (FAO, PAM, IFAD), the logistic center of Brindisi and the Staff College of Turin”. During the meeting, Guterres confirmed his intention to go on a mission to Italy to participate in the inauguration of the Olympic Games in Milan- Cortina 2026 on 6 February. Ambassador Marrapodi announced that the Italian Representation will organise, for the benefit of the Onusian membership, the direct streaming of the opening ceremony in the Delegates Lounge of the Palazzo di Vetro. On 19 November, on an Italian initiative, the Resolution on the Olympic Truce was approved by consensus and with 165 co- sponsorships at the General Assembly. At the presentation ceremony of the credentials, Ambassador Marrapodi was accompanied by his wife Loriana Fabian, the Deputy Permanent Representative Gianluca Greco and the Coordinator for the themes of sustainable development Daniela Tonon.
