Meloni “Acceptable to minimize allied contribution in Afghanistan”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The Italian government has learned with amazement the statements of President Trump that NATO allies would be ‘remained back during operations in Afghanistan”. The President of the Council Giorgia Meloni writes this in a note. “After the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, NATO activated Article 5 for the first and only time in its history: an act of extraordinary solidarity with the United States. In that massive operation against those who fueled terrorism, Italy immediately responded with allies, deploying thousands of soldiers and taking full responsibility for Regional Command West, one of the most important operational areas of the entire international mission. Over almost twenty years of commitment, our nation has supported a cost that cannot be questioned: 53 Italian soldiers dropped and over 700 wounded while engaged in combat operations, security missions and Afghan forces training programs. For this reason, there are no acceptable statements that minimize the contribution of NATO countries in Afghanistan, especially if they come from an allied nation,” the premier continues. “Italy and the United States are linked by a solid friendship, founded on the community of values and historical collaboration, even more necessary in the face of the many challenges in place. But friendship needs respect, a fundamental condition to continue to guarantee solidarity at the base of the Atlantic Alliance.”.
