Mattarella “The abduction and the barbaric assassination of Giulio Regeni remain an open wound”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the disappearance of Giulio Regeni, sent the parents Paola and Claudio and the mayor of Fiumicello Villa Vicentina, Alessandro Dijust, the following message: “The annual commemoration that the community of Fiumicello Villa Vicentina dedicates to Giulio Regeni, gathers the whole Italy in a felt and touched tribute for an ignobly broken life. Ten years after his death, we reaffirm the universal reasons for justice and respect for human fundamental rights, against all forms of torture. Giulio’s abduction and barbaric assassination, a fellow citizen, remain an open wound in the body of the national community. First of all, I address an affectionate thought to his parents, affected by the incomparable pain for the loss of a child – which took place by abite causes and inhuman mode – admirable examples of courage and determination in the search for truth. A need shared by all Italians and not only. Truth and justice must not be compromised, to protect not only the legitimate expectations of family clarity, but to preside over the fundamental principles of our constitutional and social order and international relations.”.

“The commitment of those who, with dedication, have worked and work to correspond, in this affair, to the thirst for historical and judicial truth, deserves respect and gratitude. The full collaboration of the Egyptian authorities in giving adequate answers to the demands of the Italian judiciary, in order to ascertain the facts and assure justice the responsible, continues to represent a test bench. In today’s painful recurrence, I renew the Republic’s closeness to the Regeni family and the commitment of our order so that Giulio’s memory may be honored by making full light on the circumstances and responsibilities that marked its tragic fate” concluded Mattarella.
