WASHINGTON (USA) (ITALPRESS) – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio launched a clear warning to Iraq against the formation of an executive heavily influenced or controlled by Iran, in a context of increasing fears in Washington for the possible return to power of Nouri al-Maliki. In a telephone conversation with the outgoing prime minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, Rubio expressed the hope that the next Iraqi government will work to make Iraq “a force of stability, prosperity and security in the Middle East”. The US State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said that the head of U.S. diplomacy underlined that “a government controlled by Iran cannot be able to put Iraq’s interests first, keep the country out of regional conflicts or strengthen a mutually beneficial partnership with the United States.”.
For Tehran, a aligned Iraqi executive would represent an important compensation to the recent setbacks suffered at home and in the region. On the contrary, Washington sees the strengthening of Iranian control over Baghdad as a direct threat to regional stability and security of US forces in the country.
