LECCE (ITALPRESS) – Ten years after the tragic death of Giulio Regeni, the University of Salento recalls the young researcher and graduating with a thought of deep emotion and responsibility, renewing its commitment to the defense of freedom of research, human rights and the dignity of people.
Giulio Regeni is still a powerful symbol of the value of knowledge as a tool for dialogue, justice and change. His story continues to question the academic and civil institutions, strongly recalling the duty of truth and the protection of those who dedicate their lives to study and research. The PhD in Human and Social Sciences, dedicated to him at the University of Salento, is a path born to honor the memory of Regeni and to promote a free, critical and attentive research to contemporary social, political and economic dynamics.
“At ten years after Giulio Regeni’s death,” says the PhD coordinator, Fabio de Nardis, “our task as an academic community is not to reduce his name to a memory, but to transform it into a daily commitment. The doctorate entitled to Giulio is a critical training and thinking space that holds together scientific rigour, ethical responsibility and attention to human rights. Remembering Giulio means continuing to demand truth and justice, and at the same time supporting a search that is not afraid to question power and its contradictions.”.
The University of Salento, in recalling Giulio Regeni, joins the pain of the family and reiterates its closeness to all those who, in the world, see threatened freedom of research and expression. Giulio’s memory continues to live in the activities of study, research and young generations of PhD students and PhD students who, even through this path, choose to make knowledge an instrument of civil responsibility.
