EU and India conclude negotiations for the free trade agreement, von der Leyen “Write history, it’s just the beginning”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The European Union and India have concluded today the negotiations for a free trade agreement “historical, ambitious and commercially significant, the biggest agreement of this kind ever concluded by both parties”, as the EU Commission underlines in a note. The understanding “will strengthen economic and political ties between the second and fourth world economy, at a time of increasing geopolitical tensions and global economic challenges, highlighting their common commitment to economic openness and trade based on rules”.

“The EU and India today write history, deepening the partnership between the world’s largest democracies. We have created a free-trade area of 2 billion people, with both parties destined to take economic advantages – says the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen -. We have sent a signal to the world that rules-based cooperation still produces great results. And, above all, this is only the beginning: We will build on this success and further strengthen our relations.”.

The President of the European Council, António Costa, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, met in New Delhi (India) on 27 January 2026 for the 16th summit between the European Union and India. In the course of the summit, the India-EU Partnership for Security and Defence was signed, “the first global framework of defence and security between the two parties that will deepen ties in maritime safety, industry and defence technology, cyber and hybrid threats, space and anti-terrorism,” reads in the joint declaration, which also explains how leaders have “opened with favor.”.
