In the 2025 market cars in EU growing 1.8%, electric and hybrid drive the industry

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In 2025, new cars registered in the European Union increased by 1.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. However, overall volumes remain well below pre-pandemia levels. It makes known the ACEA, the European association of car manufacturers. “The market share of battery electric cars reached 17.4%, in line with the projections for the year – emphasizes the ACEA – but still a level that leaves room for growth to remain in line with the transition. Electric hybrid vehicles are the most popular type of supply among buyers, with plug-in hybrid models that consolidate their position on the market.” In 2025, 1.880,370 new battery electric cars were registered. The data from January to December 2025 also showed an increase in registrations of new electric hybrid cars in the EU, which reached 3,733.325 units, driven by growth in the four largest markets: Spain (+23.1%), France (+21.6%), Germany (+8%) and Italy (+7.9%). Electric hybrid models account for 34.5% of the total EU market.

Plug-in hybrid electric car registrations continue to grow, reaching 1,015,887 units in the same period. This was driven by the increase in volumes in key markets such as Spain (+111.7%), Italy (+86.6%) and Germany (+62.3%). Therefore, plug-in hybrid electric cars now account for 9.4% of car registrations in the EU, increasing compared to 7.2% last year. In 2025, gasoline car registrations decreased by 18.7%, with falls in all major markets. France recorded the most significant decline, -32%, followed by Germany (-21.6%), Italy (-18.2%) and Spain (-16%). With 2.880.298 new cars registered in 2025, the market share of petrol vehicles fell to 26.6% from 33.3% of the previous year. The diesel car market continued to decline, with a decline in registrations of 24.2%, which results in a share of 8.9% in 2025. Moreover, the annual change of December 2025 showed a decrease of 19.2% for gasoline and 22.4% for diesel.
