Health, ISMETT confirmed IRCCS in the transplant area

PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – The Ministry of Health, Orazio Schillaci, adopted the D.M. 12 January 2026 with which the recognition of the scientific character of the ISMTT of Palermo in the theme area “traplantology”, consolidating its position within the national network of the 54 IRCCS (Istituti di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico). The measure, adopted in agreement with the President of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, “certificates the excellence of the Sicilian center in the clinical, managerial and research profile”, reads in a note. The decree confirms the recognition for the headquarters of Palermo in via Tricomi 5 (assistance and research) and extends the scientific character to the ISPEMI research center (Institute of Preclinical Experimentation and Molecular Imaging), a preclinical research platform created by the Ri.MED Foundation, ISMETT and IZS Sicilia realized thanks to the funds PON R&C 2007-2013 hosted at the Zootechnical Experimental Institute of Palermo. This step strengthens the development of research and integration between clinical activities and translational research in the field of transplantation. “It confirms how IRCCS in the transplant area and the extension of scientific recognition at ISPEMI’s research site – says Angelo Luca, Director of ISMETT – are a strong signal and consolidate an integrated model in which translational research accelerates innovation transfer in clinical practice, with the aim of improving the outcomes and quality of life of transplanted patients.” “We are working – Dr. Luca continues – for an ever closer synergy with the Ri.MED Foundation, which will soon inaugurate the Research Centre in Carini, and to further strengthen collaborations on the territory, including that with the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Sicilia, in a network logic supporting research and innovation in a one health vision.” The confirmation and extension process was supported by the audits of the Ministerial Evaluation Commission, which made a site visit on 13 September 2024, finding the conditions for the maintenance of the qualification. The maintenance of the qualification involves rigorous biennial monitoring: every two years institutes must demonstrate scientific excellence, quality of clinical data, active mobility and economic and financial sustainability. “The decree confirms the value of ISMETT within the Italian health and scientific landscape”, we read in a note.
