ROMA (ITALPRESS) – An explosion, attributed to a gas leak, has devastated an eight-storey residential building in the Iranian port town of Bandar Abbas, in the south of the country, causing the death of four people. The Iranian media report it. The explosion occurred in via Moallem (or boulevard of the Master), causing the partial collapse of the facade of the building, the destruction of two floors and serious damage to different cars parked nearby and a commercial exercise. Images and videos circulated on social media show piles of rubble and immediate interventions of rescue and civil defence teams. The news agency Tasnim, close to the Corps of the Guards of the Islamic Revolution (Pasdaran), categorically denied the voices circulated on social media that the explosion would have as its objective a high commander of the Navy of the Guards of the Islamic Revolution (IRGC), defining them “completely false”.
Israeli political sources have stated that Tel Aviv has no responsibility in the incident and was unaware of it. The episode takes place in a context of high tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, strategic passage for about 20% of the world oil, where Bandar Abbas is located with its important ports (Bandar Abbas and Shahid Rajaei). Yesterday, Friday, January 30, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) warned Tehran that it will not tolerate “unsafe or non-professional actions” in the area, in response to the Iranian announcement of a naval maneuver with real ammunition lasting two days. Washington cited in particular the risk of dangerous approach by fast Iranian motorists to American naval units or merchants. Local authorities are investigating the exact causes of the explosion, while rescue operations continue in place.
