ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The disciplines Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are a strategic lever for national security; a key to access the world, a tool to understand and improve it. Investing young people and training in these disciplines means strengthening security, freedom and development, keeping the person at the centre of the technological revolution.” So the Secretary of State for Defense, Senator Isabella Rauti, intervened at the event “STEM: technologies for a safe future”, promoted by Leonardo and the Leonardo ETS Foundation, in view of the National Week of STEM disciplines (4-11 February).
The undersecretary – with Delegates to Training and Equal Opportunities in Defense – stressed how Defense is “STEM for Birth and Vocation; human capital form with skills and capabilities of use and governance of new technologies – from Artificial Intelligence to quantum computing, from drones to big data, from cloud to cyber domain – in scenarios characterized by increasing complexity and hybrid threats.”.
Rauti also pointed out that “investing in STEM training represents a country system action, capable of facilitating access to the labour market in dynamic and high-value sectors, also helping to remove gender stereotypes and cultural conditioning that still affect the existing gap.”.
The Undersecretary recalled the importance of an evolution towards a STEAM approach, which integrates humanistic, cultural and ethical knowledge to scientific and technological disciplines. “Only by combining technical skills and critical thinking – he explained – it is possible to govern innovation and build a new technological humanism, in which Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies remain tools at the service of man and do not replace judgment, responsibility and creativity.”.
The event also attended students from the 4th and 5th classes of the Secondary School, involved in a direct comparison on the themes of technology, safety and the future of STEM skills as a strategic investment for the country.
