New Start, United States and Russia towards “an agreement to continue to respect it”

WASHINGTON (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – The United States and Russia “will hold to reach an agreement to continue to respect” the New Start nuclear weapons control treaty even after its expiry, fixed for today. It is what Axios reveals by citing confidential sources “victims to talks”. According to the site, the news would leak after 24 hours of intense negotiations, held in Abu Dhabi, which however did not lead to the approval of a new draft of the only agreement that until now limited the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Russia and the United States hold about 85% of all the publications present in the world, remembers Axios, and the New Start negotiations were carried out in the margins of talks about Ukraine, in the presence of US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. “We agreed with Russia to act in good faith and start a discussion on how to update,” said a US official who remained anonymous.

According to another source, one of the hypotheses of work would include a sort of “period of grace” of 6 months, in which the parties undertake to respect the agreement now expired. Meanwhile, the U.S. European Command (Us European Command) issued a statement on the day of today announcing the resumption of intermilitary dialogue with Russia suspended in 2021. “As a result of the productive and constructive progress made last week by Jared Kushner and the special envoy Steve Witkoff towards President Trump’s Ukraine peace goal, the United States and the Russian Federation agreed today in Abu Dhabi to reestablish a high-level military dialogue,” reads in the note. “This communication channel was suspended in the autumn of 2021, just before the beginning of the conflict (in Ukraine). The restoration follows the meetings in the capital of the United Arab Emirates between General Alexus G. Grynkewich, commander of the European Command of the United States, and senior Russian and Ukrainian military officers,” continues the statement that emphasizes how “maintaining dialogue between armies is an important factor for global stability and peace.”.

The New Start Treaty on the Reduction of Nuclear Weapons signed by Russia and the United States expires today. The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New Start) was signed in Prague on 8 April 2010, with entry into force on 5 February 2011, and replaced the previous Start, Start I, Start II and Sort. Last year the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, had given willingness for a one-year extension but Trump had refused, relaunching as a condition that China too signed the treaty. The Beijing authorities had rejected the hypothesis of negotiations in this sense by motivating the choice with the fact that Chinese nuclear power “is not comparable” with that of Moscow and Washington.
