ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Ministry of University and Research strengthens scientific cooperation with Kenya through the financing of new research projects and an institutional mission of Minister Anna Maria Bernini in Nairobi and Malindi. The MUR has funded with 250 thousand euros the Strength project, coordinated by Sapienza University of Rome in collaboration with the University of Nairobi, to strengthen the capacities of African universities and institutions, in particular in Kenya, in the design and management of scientific research and technology transfer. The project operates in the fields of space, digital medicine and green energy and provides advanced training, mobility for teachers, researchers and students and collaboration on research infrastructures, including the “Luigi Broglio” Space Centre in Malindi, operating base outside the national territory of the Italian Space Agency. The initiative contributes to the development of qualified human capital and lasting scientific cooperation between Italy and Africa, in line with the Mattei Plan and the G7 RCA initiative.
As part of this strengthening, Minister Bernini will be in Kenya from tomorrow to Monday for an institutional mission, the first of an Italian Minister of the University and Research in the Country. The visit is part of a particularly important phase of the Italian-Africa relations, a few days from the Italy-Africa summit of Addis Ababa chaired by the President of the Giorgia Meloni Council and the start of the year of the 50th anniversary of the relations between Kenya and the European Union. A meeting is scheduled between the President of the Republic of Kenya, William Ruto, and Minister Bernini, who anticipates the official visit to Italy of the same president in the coming months. During the mission will be undersigned to Nairobi a memorandum of understanding between the Mur and the Minister of Education of Kenya, Julius Migos Ogamba, to strengthen scientific collaboration in strategic sectors. On the occasion of the visit will also be inaugurated the headquarters of Med-Or Italian Foundation for Africa in Nairobi, the first overseas headquarters of the Foundation chaired by Marco Minniti.
The minister will also participate in the Nairobi AI Forum, promoted as part of the AI Hub for Sustainable Development, an initiative of the Italian G7 Presidency dedicated to the role of artificial intelligence for sustainable development and the strengthening of digital infrastructure in African countries. It is also planned to visit Malindi for the inauguration of the new mother-infantile department of Sub-County Hospital, realized in the context of an international cooperation project supported by Italy. In Nairobi, Minister Bernini will take part in the presentation of the professional technical course for renewable energy specialists promoted by Enel Foundation in collaboration with RES4Africa, Strathmore University and St. Kizito Vocational Institute. To follow, the minister will participate in a stage of the roadshow promoted by Mur and Med-Or Foundation, aimed at promoting new opportunities for cooperation between universities, research centers, institutions and enterprises of the two countries.
