Ukraine, Mattarella “Peace is not submission to bullying”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Italy thanks Germany for supporting Ukraine so strongly. We are looking for an end to this reckless adventure of Russia, in the hope that glimmers of peace negotiations can be found. But peace does not mean submission to bullying. That’s why helping Ukraine defend itself, supporting it economically, humanitarianally and militarily is essential to defend peace and prevent this reckless adventure from being followed by others.” President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, said this during a joint conference with German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Bellevue Palace in Berlin. “For Italy, Germany is an indispensable partner,” the Head of State went on to say. “We are going through a phase of great cooperation at the bilateral, governmental and institutional level. Our economies are extremely connected. Our collaboration embraces so many sectors, especially in those highly technological sectors projected toward the future as in the case of energy transition, which is a fundamental point for the future of our economy of our society and the future of Europe.” For Mattarella now the new leaders of the Union “are called to a quantity of commitments not only of ordinary administration but above all it is necessary to recover the trust of the citizens in a way that raises the electoral participation that stopped just above 50 percent,” he stressed. “The vote moreover was a great exercise of democracy and an example for the world. I believe that Germany and Italy have the responsibility and the ability to urge together a growth of the Union in order to effectively face the challenges they face with courageous choices that must be put in the pipeline with a constructive dialogue,” he concluded.
