Iran insists on the right to enrich uranium

TEHERAN (IRAN) (ITALPRESS) – The Iranian Parliament held a closed-door session to examine the latest developments in the indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the United States, mediated by the Oman. The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, General Abdolrahim Mousavi, as reported by the Iranian agency Mehr.

The President of the Strategic Council for Foreign Relations, Kamal Kharrazi, called “positive” the path of the first negotiating round, expressing hope that indirect talks with the US counterpart proceed well. Speaking to the Isna agency, Kharrazi stressed that Americans should understand how previous approaches did not bring results and should adopt “new paths”, adding: “We will see what things will take.”.

Minister Araghchi, speaking yesterday, reiterated that the recognition of Iran’s right to enrich uranium on its territory is an essential element for the success of negotiations on the nuclear programme. “We cannot accept a total deprivation of enrichment – said Araghchi – so we must focus on discussions that accept enrichment in Iran, building confidence that it is and remains an activity for peaceful purposes.”.
