ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The “Treno del memoria” is back from 10 February to 1 March 2026 to celebrate the Day of Remembrance, established under Law No. 92 of 30 March 2004. With an itinerant exhibition set up on a historical train, made available by the Italian FS Group and the FS Foundation, the initiative ideally traces the journey made at the time by the Istrian, Fiumani and Dalmati exiles to reach the various refugee camps on the national territory, from North to South. The presentation of the third edition of the “Treno del Ricordi” and the initiatives sponsored by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers on the occasion of the Day of the Remembrance of the Martyrs of the Foibe and the Jewish-Democratic Exodus, was held today at the press room of Palazzo Chigi in the presence of the Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, and the president of the Italian FS Group, Tommaso Tanzilli. The project tells the story of hundreds of thousands of Italians who chose to abandon everything in order not to give up their identity. In the five carriages of the train, visitors will be able to know and deepen the tragedy of the foibe and the exodus through a multimedia path, alternating information panels, images of repertoire and original texts recited by a narrating voice.
The exhibition is enriched by the exhibition of some of the farms of the exiles, kept by the Regional Institute for Culture Istrian-Fiumano-dalmata in the warehouse 18 of Trieste. The fifth carriage, novelty of the 2026 edition, is dedicated to the transmission of memory to young generations. It is set up in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Merit, which has provided a selection of the students’ drawings that participated in the national competition “The Day of Remembrance”, and with the Italian Agency for Youth, which has realized “The Journey of Remembrance” in the places symbol of the Jewish-Dalmata exodus. The 2026 edition will touch 11 cities. From Trieste on February 10, then continue to Pordenone (12-13 February), Bologna (14-15 February), Pescara (16-17 February), L’Aquila (18 February), Rome (19-20 February), Latina (21 February), Salerno (22 February) and Reggio Calabria (24-25 February). The Train will then move to Sicily, where it will first touch Palermo (26-27 February) and then conclude its journey to Syracuse (28 February-1° March). Particularly significant is the presence in the itinerary of Pordenone and L’Aquila, both proclaimed “Capitale Italiana della Cultura”: the capital of Abruzzo for 2026 and Pordenone for 2027. The Remembrance Train will also trace a symbolic “passage of deliveries” between the two cities, to combine memory, identity and future.
The “Treno del memoria” is promoted by the Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi. It is realized by the Mission Structure for the anniversaries of national interest of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Italian FS Group and the FS Foundation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Education and Merit, the Ministry of University and Research, the Ministry of Culture, the Italian Agency for Youth, the Regional Institute for Culture Istrian-FiumanoDalmata, Rai Teche, Istituto Luce, Rai Cultura. The “Three of Remembrance” is part of the commemorations programmed by the Coordination Committee for the Day of Remembrance celebrations, established at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
“The Remembrance Train will bring content to tell and do it not only for those who remember this memory, but especially for the youngest who have never known the history of our country. To cultivate the culture of respect, the culture of life that has been denied to many Italians with this tragedy,” said the Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi.
The Railways are “a piece of the State and, as such, we could not but accompany this project and follow everything that somehow is the identity of the nation. This dramatic event in the immediate post-war period must certainly be remembered, also because a large part of the Istrian exiles used the means of the train to reach their final destinations throughout Italy. And so we felt, I would say almost obliged, to give a signal of memory, memory and a signal of identity to the nation”, says the president of the Italian FS Group, Tommaso Tanzilli.
