ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The popularity of taekwondo, in Italy, is growing in an important way”. Chungwon Choue, president of the World Taekwondo Federation since 2004. Choue, whose trips to Italy are frequent, stopped in Rome after witnessing, a few days ago in San Siro, at the opening ceremony of Milan Cortina 2026.
“It was fantastic – the comment on the evening that opened the Winter Olympics – wonderful, an opportunity to show Italian culture and everything it represents.” Rome, instead, will return to host in 2026 a stage of the Grand Prix Series, the first appointment that will award points in optics qualification to the Games of Los Angeles 2028. The world circuit will return to the capital for 2027.
“Italy is doing a great job for the Grand Prix – explains Choue. The Grand Prix Series began in 2013 in Manchester and moved around major cities not only in Europe, but worldwide. Rome hosted the 2018 and 2019 editions, then everything stopped for the pandemic and in 2022 we resumed”.
“Now there will be a new edition in Rome, at the beginning of June: it is an event that will have an Olympic dimension. The World Taekwondo Federation has 215 nations, plus the team of refugee athletes that we support from the Olympic Games in Rio 2016, and will be present through some athletes also at the Grand Prix in Rome. All this is important to promote taekwondo in the world”, added the number one of the international federation that does not fail to underline the blue medals arrived in the last editions of the Games: “In its history Italy has already got two bears, one silver and two bronzes at the Olympics. In Tokyo, when Korea won not even a gold and Italy did so with Vito Dell’Aquila, it did even better than Korea and, even in the L.A. 2028, it has excellent chances of medal because it has very talented athletes, both among men and among women. The Italian Federation of Taekwondo has a long history, in 2026 celebrates its 60th anniversary and Italy is one of the most important nations in the world along with Korea.”.
