PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – “We are not doing enough for emergencies: from the beginning we said that the 100 million allocated for the three affected regions were not enough to cope with 2.5 billion estimated damage.” To say, regarding the damage caused by the cyclone Harry in Sicily, Calabria and Sardinia, the secretary of the Pd Elly Schlein on the margin of the initiative ‘Vota no to defend the Constitution’, to the cinema Rouge et Noir in Palermo. “We need to find more resources – continues Schlein –. We have proposed to use the billion which has been allocated for 2026 for the bridge over the strait, which however the government will not be able to use because of the stop of the Court of Auditors. We ask to put immediately that billion at the disposal of the affected territories for urgent interventions and for safety, then in perspective it serves a plan of prevention of hydrogeological dissect: we are a fragile territory, we cannot continue to be a country that continues to spend four times after emergencies what instead invests in prevention”.
“Today we stayed in Mazara del Vallo to see the damages of the cyclone Harry that undoubtedly hit more violently the Jonian coast, but don’t forget that he also fell on western Sicily,” he added. “The damage we have seen today is very big, we have met with bathers who in a few hours have lost in the waves 8 meters high sacrifices and investments made in an entire working life – adds Schlein –. The violence of the cyclone literally ate 30 meters of beach, has broken the wood of the lids and the catwalks, has swallowed the cabins, has even broken the cement: to these territories serve celery answers, because the Sicilian one is an economy that lives mainly of the beautiful season and these people must be put in condition not to lose the season, because in that case the damage would be double. We wanted to verify in person the damage of the other side, after the other time I was in Niscemi and Riposto: they need answers for everyone”.
“ Yesterday we saw a rejection of our amendment which proposed a trivial thing: the suspension of taxes and the payment of taxes for families and businesses in the territories affected by bad weather. You can’t pretend nothing and continue to ask them to pay all taxes while they are already not receiving clear answers and perspectives on what they have lost and on the resonances: a special thought goes also to those who lost the house to Niscemi and needs to have a clear perspective ahead of them soon,” Schlein points out.
