Tajani presides over a round table on immigration with the British counterpart Cooper

MONACO DI BAVIERA (GERMANY) (ITALPRESS) – Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani presided today in Munich, together with the UK Foreign Minister, Yvette Cooper, the second round table on the contrast to irregular immigration after that organized last year always at the edge of the Monaco Security Conference. The Foreign Ministers and representatives of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and the EU High Representative Kaja Kallas attended the meeting. Opening the work, Minister Tajani recalled that the contrast to irregular immigration is also a priority objective of foreign policy, to be faced with an integrated approach, of which is the Mattei Plan, which points to the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts, as well as economic development in countries of origin and transit. The meeting provided an important moment of discussion on the concrete measures which the Foreign Ministers could adopt jointly for the contrast of irregular immigration, and on more effective development cooperation measures to reduce migratory flows. In this context, the Process of Rome, of which the United Kingdom is also a part, has been valued for its role as an inclusive platform, which brings together countries of origin, transit and destination, together with the competent international organizations, promoting the alignment of priorities and sharing of responsibility and project initiatives.

In 2025, as already in previous years, Italy was confirmed as the first EU country to target irregular migration flows (about 66,300 arrivals, -0,5% compared to 2024 and -57% compared to 2023). The arrivals from the Libyan coast represented 88% of the total, while those from Tunisia 7%. Bangladesh has confirmed itself first nationality for arrivals (+41%), while arrivals from the Horn of Africa (Eritrea +251%, Ethiopia +71%), Egypt (+108%) and Sudan (+95%). In the European Union, irregular arrivals in 2025 fell by 26%.
