TEHERAN (ITALPRESS) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared, immediately after his arrival in Geneva, that “the surrender to threats is not an option on the table”, stressing that he has arrived in the Swiss city bringing “practical and realistic ideas” aimed at achieving “a fair, fair and balanced agreement” on the nuclear dossier. Araghchi’s declarations were issued through the X platform (ex Twitter) and in official communications of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, on the eve of the start, scheduled for tomorrow Tuesday, of the second round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States, mediated by the Oman sultanate.
The minister has specified that today he will meet, together with nuclear experts, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (AIEA) Rafael Grossi to discuss in depth technical issues related to the nuclear program. He will then have an interview with Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi before the beginning of the real negotiations with the US delegation.
The statements arrive in a context of increasing American pressure, marked by repeated military threats by President Donald Trump’s administration, including sending additional forces to the Gulf and explicit references to a military option in the event of diplomatic failure.
Araghchi, however, reiterated that the negotiations must take place “on the basis of equality and mutual respect”, far from “threats and excessive demands”. Araghchi leads an Iranian delegation of nuclear diplomats and technicians.
According to sources, the U.S. side will be represented by President Jared Kushner’s principal advisor and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
The stated goal of the conversations is to re-launch or conclude a new agreement that addresses the Iranian nuclear programme, revoke sanctions and prevent military escalation after a first round in the past few weeks.
