ROME (ITALPRESS) – In August, compared with the previous month, the employed and inactive grew compared with the decrease in the unemployed. This was announced by Istat. Employment increases (+0.2 percent, or +45 thousand) for men, employees and in all age groups, except for 35-49 year olds among whom it decreases, as well as among women and the self-employed. The rate of
employment is stable at 62.3 percent. The number of job seekers falls (-2.8%, or -46 thousand) for both gender components and in all age groups, again with the exception of 35-49 year olds. The unemployment rate
falls to 6.2 percent (-0.2 points), the youth rate to 18.3 percent (-1.7 points). The number of inactive people increases (+0.4%, or +44 thousand) among men, women, 15-34 year olds and those over
50 years old. The inactivity rate rises to 33.4 percent (+0.1 points).
A comparison of the June-August 2024 quarter with the previous quarter (March-May 2024) shows an increase in the number of employed people by 0.5 percent (or +114 thousand).
Also according to the Statistical Office, the growth in employment observed in the quarterly comparison is associated with a decrease in job seekers (-5.6 percent, or -97 thousand) and an increase in the inactive (+0.6 percent, or +68 thousand). The number of employed people in August 2024 exceeds that of August 2023 by 2.1 percent (+494 thousand units). The increase involves men, women, and all age groups. The employment rate in one year rises by 0.8 percentage points. Compared to August 2023, the number of people looking for work decreases (-18.3%, or -355 thousand) while the number of inactive people aged 15-64 increases (+0.9%, or +106 thousand).
“In August 2024, the number of employed people is up compared to the previous month (+45 thousand units) and reaches 24 million 80 thousand; the increase involves employees, both permanent – reaching 16 million 106 thousand – and fixed-term, amounting to 2 million 811 thousand; the self-employed fall to 5 million 163 thousand,” Istat comments.
“The number of employed exceeds that of August 2023 by 494 thousand
units: +516 thousand permanent employees, +123 thousand self-employed and –
144 thousand temporary employees,” the note concludes. On a monthly basis, the employment rate is stable, that of
inactivity increases, reaching 33.4 percent, while the rate of
unemployment drops to 6.2 percent.”
