Unrae, the car market used in 2025 closes up 2.9%

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – After the slight decline of November, the car market used in December returns to the positive sign: with 467.977 ownership transfers (dates waiting for consolidation), the month recorded a +0.8% compared to 464.167 of December 2024 (-3.4% on 2019). Net transfers grow by 0.6%, while minivoltures mark a +1.1%. The year 2025 stores a growth of 2.9% with 5.593.646 transfers (-0.4% on 2019). Among the motorizations the diesel in the month confirms the 1° place, to 39,9% of quota, albeit in decrease of 3,7 p.p. (41,3% in total year). The petrol engine, at a minimum distance, stops at 37.8% (-0.3 p.p. and at 38.6% in the pile). Hybrids confirm a sustained growth, touching 11.9% in the month and 10.3% in January-December; they follow Gpl and methane respectively to 5.5% and 2.0% in the month (5.3% and 2.0% in the cumulated); BEV and plug-ins rise to 1.3% and 1.6% in December (1.1% and 1.3% in 12 months). In December transfers per contractor confirm the trend of the previous months: exchanges between private individuals/businesses, which remain largely predominant, are stable and account for 56.5% of all ownership passes (56.3% in 12 months). At the same time, 0.8 points are lost from those from operator to final customer, to 37.7% in the month and 38.9% in the cumulation. The same are also penalized by the exchanges coming from auto-immatricolazioni that increase of 0.7 points of quota (4.7% in the month and 3.9% in the cumulated), while they recover 0.1 points from the rental (1.1% overall in the month and 0.9% in the 12 months). In December the analysis by region confirms unchanged the podium: first place Lombardy, at 16.0% (+0.2 p.p.) and second Lazio at 9.5% (-0.2 p.p.). In the third position we find Campania with 8.8% of altitude (+0.1 p.p.) and in the 4th place the Veneto stable to 8.4%, that climbs Sicily to 8.2%.

In December, the net transfection of cars with over 10 years of age earns 0.7 points, at 48.0%. The car from 6 to 10 years rises by 0.3 points, at 17,3%. The cars from 4 to 6 years represent 10.5% (-1.6 p.p. compared to 2024); 12.0% the share of cars from 2 to 4 years (-0.1 p.p. on December 2024), and 4.5% that of cars from 1 to 2 years (-0.1 p.p.). The cars up to 1 year go up to 7.8% in the month and 6.5% in the cumulation. Overall, car transfers up to 4 years of age cover 24.3% in December, 0.7 points in more than the same month 2024. On the front of the minivolture, it grows of 2.3 points to 29.2% the share of the rites of cars from the operators, and drops to 54.8% (-1.7 points) the share of private or other companies that permutate their car. Cars from Long-Term Rental (at 10.7%) drop 0,7 from Short-Term Rental (at 3.0%) and recover 0.2 from self-registration (at 2.2%). Among the minivoltures diesel cars maintain leadership in the month, but drop 3.5 points to 40.9%. The petrol engine loses 0.4 points to 32.7%. The Gpl rises to 5.5%, the methane yields 0.2 points to 1.8%. In sustained growth the minivoltures of hybrid cars, to 15.2%. Plug-in hybrids and electrics are also positioned at 2.4% (+0.6 points) and 1.6% (+0.3 p.p.). Also among the minivoltures recovers the share of cars with more than 10 years, to 34.7% of the total: 0.7 points in more than December 2024 (36.1% in total year). Earn 0.3 points the band from 6 to 10 years (to 19.0%) and loses 1.8 points that from 4 to 6 years, to 10.9%. Stable the band from 2 to 4 years (at 16.9%); that from 1 to 2 years drops to 5.4% (-0.2 p.p.), while recovers 1,1 points that up to 1 year, to 13,1%. Overall, the minivoltures of cars up to 4 years of age cover 35.4% in December, almost 1 point in more than the same month 2024.

In the year 2025, a total of 3,17 million used cars (net transfers) and 1,538 new cars were purchased (total of 4,708,100 cars, +0.4% compared to the same period 2024), with a ratio used/new in light growth: for each new car 2,1 were purchased (2,0 in the entire 2024). The report is calculated excluding minivoltures, which represent temporary passages on behalf of the Concessionary pending resale. In Italy, at 31 December 2024, more than 40,5 million cars were circulated, 57,7% of which were older than 10 years old. Overall, for 100 cars circulating at the beginning of 2025, in the entire year 7.8 were purchased, while this ratio rises to 12.4% for the range from 2.1 to 4 years and falls to 6.6 for that with older than 10 years. 40.8% of cars at 31 December 2024 responded to Directive Euro 6, 16.4% to Directive Euro 5 and 21.0% to Directive Euro 4. In the course of the year 2025 the car transfers Euro 6 were 51.6% of the total (almost 1 net property transfers every 10 circulating cars), those of cars Euro 5 17.8% and those of cars Euro 4 20.7%. Fees much lower than the circulating (from 0.6 to 2.6 each 100 cars) are recorded for cars from Euro 0 to Euro 3. The 42.0% of cars at 31 December 2024 were made of petrol cars, slightly higher than 40.9% of diesel cars. In the face of this, in the year 2025 gasoline car transfers were 38.6% of the total and those of diesel cars 41.3%. Transfers of hybrid cars cover a share of 10.3% compared to a share of 6.7% on the road at 31 December 2024. The new feeds (BEV, PHEV, HEV) have the highest incidence of the number of net transfers related to the circulator: respectively 12.5-14,8-11,9 each 100 units.
