Italy returns to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Locatelli: “Reference point with dialogue and concrete action”

GINEVRA (SVIZZERA) (ITALPRESS) – The Disability Minister Alessandra Locatelli has intervened today at the High Level segment of the 61st Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

“Italy returns to this Council with the firm conviction that it can be a point of reference and a centre of dialogue, cooperation and concrete action, offering its experience and global vision – said Locatelli. It must be peace to guide and inspire people and not hatred. Italy reiterates its commitment to the elimination of the death penalty and with conviction it places first the respect and dignity of each person’s life starting from women, children, elders and people with disabilities.”.

“The protection of children and young people, especially in conflicts, humanitarian crises and emergencies, is a moral imperative and we must unite forces to protect and protect them always – he added. As Minister for Disability, I wish to reiterate Italy’s commitment to guarantee the right of each person to full participation in working, social, recreational, cultural, sports and political life. This is in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary, and with the important reform on the disability we are implementing in Italy, and which places people at the centre of policies and changes perspective: to see the potential of each person and not its limits.”.

“The Olympics of Milan Cortina have just ended and the Paralympics will soon begin – he has highlighted –, I hope one day, not too far, to see our athletes parade all together.”.

At the end, the Locatelli ministra inaugurated the travelling exhibition Inclusion and Disability: The Solfagnano Charter “Nothing about us, without us”, inspired by the final document of the first G7 Inclusion and Disability of 2024. The project, which will touch the G7 countries over the year, aims to illustrate the implementation of the commitments signed through panels that describe with comics and easy-to-understand phrases the eight priorities of the Charter.

The exhibition is also accessible to people with visual disabilities through QR Codes. “The exhibition – he explained – is an invitation to all, countries, third sector organizations and private world, to join in this path, based on principles and priorities, to work together and build a better world.”.
