Rare diseases, Mattarella “The right to health is uniform throughout the national territory”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “For definition, the care of patients with rare diseases is particularly complex. Opportunity, this year, the World Day of Rare Diseases is dedicated to equity in access to care. The theme draws attention to the need to guarantee all people, regardless of the nature of the disease from which they are affected, equal rights and equal therapeutic opportunities. A commitment that not only concerns access to drugs and extends to the whole range of therapies, treatments and services that accompany the entire treatment path.” Thus the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a note.

“Despite significant progress in recent years, today only 5% of the more than 8,000 known rare diseases have a specific pharmacological therapy. Hence the importance of research and the provision of the necessary therapies, alongside rehabilitation and social-assistance services. Italy stands out for its active commitment to promoting access to drugs for rare diseases and reducing the time between authorisation and effective availability of therapies. They remain, however, territorial unhomogeneity affecting the actual exciseability of performance and determine non-acceptable disparities: the right to health, constitutionally guaranteed, must find uniform application on the entire national territory. To people carrying rare diseases, to their families, to associations that with competence and passion flank them, go the recognition and support of the Republic for their commitment to guiding public policies and the spread of greater social awareness of this phenomenon”.
