Stop a Trump, “Voice of America” can return to inform

NEW YORK (ITALPRESS) – It is a heavy judicial defeat, but above all symbolic, that suffered by Donald Trump on the front of “Voice of America”. A federal judge ordered the complete restoration of the operations of the American public broadcaster, imposing the return to the work of over a thousand journalists and employees by March 23rd. Judge Royce C. Lamberth’s decision disassembled, point by point, the Trump administration’s attempt to drastically resize – almost to turn off – one of the main voices of American soft power in the world.

Founded in 1942 to counter Nazi propaganda, Voice of America broadcasts in dozens of languages and reaches hundreds of millions of people, especially in countries where freedom of press is limited or non-existent. The heart of the sentence is simple but politically explosive: the White House cannot ignore the laws of Congress that impose the spread of pluralistic and independent information. According to the judge, the administration “plateally violated” these obligations, reducing the issuer to minimal operations and emptying the mission.

It’s not just a bureaucratic battle. It is a direct confrontation in the role of journalism in a democracy. Trump has repeatedly attacked Voice of America by defining it as the “voice of radical America”, placing it in a broader strategy of media delegittimation, from large newspapers to federal agencies. The attempt to dismantle VOA is perhaps the most radical step of this strategy: not only criticize the press, but effectively reduce its operational capacity. The figure of Kari Lake, headed by the supervisory agency and already rejected by a previous verdict, has become the symbol of this approach.

The judge openly accused Trump of ignoring the law for almost a year, threatening sanctions for outrage at the court. But the political significance of the decision goes beyond the specific case. This sentence reaffirms a fundamental principle: public journalism, when guaranteed by law, cannot be transformed into a political instrument or dismantled for ideological reasons. At a time when global disinformation has become a ground of geopolitical confrontation, weakening Voice of America also means weakening the ability of the United States to compete with the narratives of powers such as China, Russia or Iran.

It remains now to see if the administration will appeal. But the political damage is already done. Again, it is the judicial power to stop an attempt by the White House to redefine – or narrow – the boundaries of freedom of press. Trump’s has not so far been an episodic war against individual media, but a wider project, which aims to redefine the relationship between power and information. This sentence represents, at least for now, an argine. But the battle is far from over.
