ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “Even in the crisis of values that cross the continent in a century that has known the horrors of Nazism and fascism and those of communism, culture remains a herd. In short, Europe finds its foundation in human dignity, solidarity, civil values. In these foundations we have confidence: they will not yield to the attacks of those who want to dismantle the European construction.” This was said by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in the intervention on the occasion of the delivery of the academic honorary doctor’s honorary honour awarded by the University of Salamanca.
“We must find the ambition of the leaders who, in 1951, in the preamble to the Treaty of the Coal and Steel Community, put these words: ‘Convinced that the contribution that an organized and living Europe can make to civilization is indispensable for maintaining peaceful relations’. A Europe, therefore, an indispensable nucleus for the maintenance of those peaceful relations that six years before the San Francisco Charter had put at the heart of the United Nations identity mission,” he added.
“An Organization that was born to subtract individual states – no matter how powerful – fundamental decisions on peace and security, thus imagining a new season of international law based on three pillars: the ban on the use of force; the principle of sovereign equality of States; the universal promotion of human rights. In which peace and human rights do not constitute distinct areas, but are complementary dimensions of a normative project aimed at overcoming the logic of the Westphalian system. Peace in short does not coincide with any balance but is realized in the presence of conditions of justice and inclusion,” he stressed.
